Meet the Staff: Emily Beker ’15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Majors/Minors: Creative Writing and Elementary Education

Year: 2015

Hometown: Riverdale, NY. Fun fact though: I am actually a Massachusetts resident.

Her Campus: What are you involved with on campus?Emily Beker: Liquid Latex, Dance Marathon Waltham Fundraising Chair, I’m a UDR for the Education Department, on Hillel Board and Her Campus!

HC: Why did you get involved in Her Campus?EB: I wanted to write about topics I was inspired by and get involved in a great community of women at Brandeis. I was also excited to get involved because it was so new to me and I had never been into journalism or social media. Now I am in love with it. I have my own blog and I don’t think my experience at Brandeis would have been the same without it.

HC: What do you do at Her Campus?EB: I am one of the two Campus Correspondents. We help organize events, the content that gets uploaded, and work with the amazing team we have. I have been a CC for two years and been involved with Her Campus Brandeis for three. It has been an unbelievable experience. I learned so much from it already that I know I will take with me when I graduate (which, for the record, feels so distant and unreal to me still. I am not a senior).

HC: What is your favorite thing about Brandeis?EB: How helpful the professors and staff are here about academics. They want you to succeed. I also love how involved you can be. If I had to pick one of the five clubs I did I would not be a happy camper. I really believe that being at Brandeis means having the freedom to do whatever you want, and be all those different people.

HC: What are some of your favorite things to do at Brandeis?EB: It would have to be sitting in the SCC or on the Great Lawn when it is nice out. That is another one of my favorite things- you will usually see someone you know walking around, and those two areas are my favorite spots now.

HC: If you could give a Brandeis first year one piece of advice, what would it be?EB: Get involved early. I regret not getting involved my freshman year. Find a club you think looks cool or you want to try. Then actually try it. Use those thousands of e-mails telling you about meeting times wisely. Go to them. Make new friends. Find a passion and roll with it. It might take you great places.

HC: What do you want to do after Brandeis?EB: I want to teach elementary school. I love kids and I want to work with first through third graders. I am probably going to grad school next year to get a master’s, but hopefully a job will come my way and I can do both together. I get sad when I am not in a classroom working with kids. They have some magical power that makes even the worst day better.

HC: How can someone get involved with Her Campus?EB: Come to meetings or e-mail Sydney or me! We love new writers and we want to hear what you are passionate about! We are also a great group of girls who like to sit around and chat about mundane things. It is a lot of fun and I know it really shaped my Brandeis experience these past two years.
