This Tuesday the Brandeis community received news that astonished us all.
Katherine Sommers (Class of 2014) had passed away just hours earlier. While some of us knew Kat better than others, we are all deeply moved and saddened. We can’t imagine the pain this has caused Kat’s family and all of us at Her Campus would like to offer our sincere condolences. It is clear from the overwhelming response to this devastating news that Kat was greatly loved and respected by her peers and we are so sincerely sorry for your loss.
We often ask those who are in mourning how they are coping and how they are. But how can you cope, how can you just be when someone you love is missing? We didn’t know Kat well, and so for that reason alone we too have suffered a loss. We have lost the opportunity to get to know Kat, to build memories with her and to love her like her family and friends did.
When we first enter the Brandeis gates, there is something special that binds us to one another which stays long after our four years have passed. Kat will be remembered and cherished here and our Brandeis ‘family’ has lost one of its own. We hope the Brandeis community can continue to stay strong as the true magnitude of this tragedy sets in and we hope that Kat’s loved ones can take solace in the warmth and sincerity with which the Brandeis student body has regarded Kat’s memory. We hope that you will continue to take strength and support from all of us as we grieve together.
There will be a memorial walk held in Kat’s honor starting at 11:00 am today in the Peace Circle near Usdan and ending in Sherman with a Vigil. All are welcome to attend.
