Recently HC sat down will Brandeis senior Jordan Longert to talk about her Go Green initiative that quickly became Brandeis’ next big thing! Here’s the story behind Jordan’s big idea:
HCB: How did the initiative begin?
JL: For Professor Laura Goldin’s class, Greening the Ivory Tower, we were asked to implement a green initiative either on campus or in the greater Waltham area. Robyn Blumberg, Elana Reinholtz, Amira Mintz-Morgenthau and I decided we needed to make our orientation program more environmentally friendly and our students more environmentally aware.
HCB: Tell us more about the project details?
JL: We had four aspects to the project: an Eco-Tour, the Give and Go/Move-in Market, the Green Quiz and the Green e-mail. We were all responsible for our own part of the project. The Eco-Tour was the aspect of the project that I was responsible. During the Eco-Tour we had orientation leaders and volunteers accompany the traditional campus tour leaders and share facts about 9 different green locations around campus.
HCB: How did people react to the project?
JL: We had really great feedback from the students and feel that our project really made quite an impact. Many of the midyear and transfer students knew a lot about sustainable living but learned through our program about green living at Brandeis specifically.
