Since the weather has warmed up recently, so long as you do not count that minor snowfall we had yesterday, the thought of wearing heavy down jackets nowadays seems to be a little ridiculous.  Instead, consider replacing those thick jackets with lighter and more fitted ones that are much more appropriate for the upcoming season.

I have listed my three spring outerwear staples that I am looking forward to sporting very soon.

The Leather Jacket:

If I was asked the typical “If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one ______ what would it be?” question in reference to a jacket… I would hands down bring a leather one. While it might be a little hot and too dressy for a desert island, the fact that I would bring it anyway speaks volumes to how significant of a role it plays in a ladies’ wardrobe. First of all, it goes with virtually anything: jeans, khakis, skirts, tailored shorts, chords, dresses… etc. Secondly, it can make any ensemble look dressy or casual based upon what you wear it with and the way you accessorize it. Lastly, they can last you a lifetime, which in the fashion world means at least more than one season… I kid I kid.But seriously a great leather jacket can endure up to ten to twenty years if you maintain it properly. Although they are expensive, investing in one is definitely worth it since you will get so much wear out of it. This lovely Free People jacket is beyond chic, yet understated because of its color. At the same time however, it has an incredible ability to bring the entire outfit together, making it my ideal pick for a spring jacket.

The Denim Jacket:

Boy do I love me a great denim jacket. I have always been a fan of the denim jacket through and through. I love
the simplicity of a Levi’s jean jacket and have been hooked since I was five… that is the one piece of fashion advice I would ever trust from my young self, just in case you might have questioned my validity. While I think you can do no wrong when wearing a denim jacket, even if you pair it with denim (gasp), some of my favorite looks include wearing one over a floral dress, over a light sweater, or with a simple t shirt underneath. While some people might stray away from wearing denim jackets because they do not know which wash to choose, here is my advice on how to alleviate any hesitations: stick to lighter washes for the spring/summer (not too light though), and go for darker hues in the winter. Here is one of my favorite jean jackets from Levi’s, which is similar to the one I wear all the time.

The Trench Coat:

I always had this notion that trench coats were for sophisticated businesswomen and stylish moms because they
seemed so professional-looking. Because of this silly pre-conceived notion, it took me a WHILE before I even worked up the courage to step into this world of the unknown by trying one on. Despite expecting to feel like I was ready to hit the office or drive my imaginary kids to school, those thoughts never entered my mind when I did. I love how they have belts that give you a waist… a major plus when wearing coats that could otherwise make it look like you are wearing a paper bag, and I’m obsessed that some of them are waterproof and therefore double as rain coats! This white Nanette Lepore one is perfect for the spring and the summer a. because of the color and b. because it isn’t too long, like some trenches you might spot people wearing during the colder months. So I no longer fear the coat, in fact it is now entrenched in my mind as the perfect coat for any woman!

So this spring, keep your jackets simple, stylish, and sophisticated.
