End of Semester De-Stressers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

As the semester comes to a close, it can be easy to get lost in a whirlwind of papers, exams, and projects. In order to make it through finals without burning out, you have to make some time for yourself. Here are some of my favorite stress-busting techniques for when the going gets tough (and I’m taking orgo chem this year, so believe me, it gets tough!)

Study near a friend
If you really can’t put down your anthro assignment but want to de-stress a bit, try studying next to a friend. You’d be surprised how even just sitting in silence next to someone you care about can calm your nerves.

Watch a TV show
Find a show that’s half an hour when it’s on television. If you watch it online, it’ll be about 20-minutes long–a perfect study break! I like to watch funny shows like Modern Family, Whitney, and Parks & Rec.

Paint your nails
Put down the book and break out your nail polish. Concentrating on neatly painting your nails will get your mind off whatever is stressing you out. By the time they’re dry, you’ll be ready to get back to work.

Do laundry
I love the feeling of clean, warm laundry. And switching up your sheets will give your room a nice change of scenery. Study while the clothes are in the washer and dryer, and then crank some tunes as you put your clothes away.

Sit outside
Now that the weather is nice, take a break and get your daily-dose of vitamin D.

Listen to music
If you’re tied to your desk all day, turning on music can help keep your energy up while you’re writing, making flashcards, or solving problems.

Eat a fun snack
You’re brain needs fuel, but fuel doesn’t have to be boring granola bars. Dip carrots in salad dressing for a healthy and crunchy snack, put bananas and peanut butter on a rice cake for some protein, or eat a chocolate pudding cup for a treat!

Hug someone
Take a break to hug a friend or cuddle with your boyfriend. Human contact has been shown to lower stress horemones. Why not test that theory out?

Freshen your room
Spray fabreeze or perfume, buy an airfreshener, or light a scented candle to change to atomosphere of your room. Smell can elicit emotions, so choosing calming scents such as lavender and chamomile can help you de-stress.

Make Easy Mac
There’s just something hypnotic about stirring orange cheese powder into elbow noodles…
