Her Campus: What attracted you to Brandeis University?
Emily Kalver: I had a lot of friends that went to Brandeis who liked it, but what really did it for me was going on a tour of the campus. I was visiting schools in Boston, and I already had two schools picked out, but my mom said I had to pick a third. She said I had tour either Tufts or Brandeis. I randomly chose Brandeis—I actually really wanted to go shopping that day. So we came here and then I fell in love with the school. Everyone was really friendly when I was walking around and I ran into a bunch of my friends and it was just really nice. So many people are really enthusiastic about this campus.
HC: What activities are you involved in on campus?
EK: I’m in the Harry Potter Alliance, the American Sign Language Club, and the co-Founder and co-President of No Singer Cleft Left Behind (Brandeis’s only all-inclusive acapella group).
HC: What prompted you to create No Singer Cleft Left Behind?
EK: During the fall semester my friend Steven Hoffman and I were going through the audition process for acapella groups and it was a really frustrating experience. We were both really sick of it: we just wanted to sing in a low stress environment. So we decided to create our own group and let whoever wanted to sing come sing with us and it’s just been really fun.
HC: What is one of your most embarrassing moments of freshman year?
EK: All of freshman year has been a series of awkward encounters with people.
HC: What advice would you give to incoming freshman?
EK: Chill out. You think you’re the weirdest person here, but we’re in a school full of really interesting people. You’ll find your friends here, don’t worry.
HC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
EK: Hopefully I’ll have a job and I’ll be eating lots of chocolate.
