Course Registration: Let the Fun Begin!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Enrollment has begun, and in case you missed it—Sage was once again down! Here is what to do when enrollment reopens in January and when enrolling for fall 2013 classes—when technology doesn’t fail you:

Plan ahead: Make sure you have your schedule mapped out before registration. This way, when it comes down to decision time, you won’t be scrambling.

Have a back-up plan: If a class has a limit of 15, make sure you have a couple classes lined up that you would be willing to take if that one doesn’t work out.

Use your appointments wisely: Try to predict which classes will fill up first, and sign up for those with your first enrollment appointment. Otherwise you will be stuck begging the professor to let you in.

Be realistic: Do you have trouble waking up before 9 a.m.? Do you get nasty if you don’t eat right at noon? Plan a schedule that works for you; halfway through the semester you will thank yourself.

Requirements first: I know, I know. Nobody wants to take a writing-intensive, but as a senior with one semester left and still one WI credit left, TAKE YOUR REQUIREMENTS EARLY. You will thank yourself later.

Use your resources: Talk to advisors, friends, professors, anyone! Use the Course Evaluation Guide. The CEG compiles all those course evaluations you fill out; this way you can know which classes are actually worth taking. Browse old course syllabi on Latte, and get a feel for the workload.

Don’t take too many, or too few: The max you can take is six classes, but only do this if you REALLY think you can handle it. Most students take four or five classes, but do what feels right for you. If you think you will have too much free time with four, try adding another class.

Shop: I know I don’t have to tell you twice to shop, but take advantage of the shopping period at the beginning of the semester. Your schedule is not set in stone, so feel free to look around!

Don’t forget gym: If you have not tested out of the gym requirements, make sure to sign up for this requirement! It is so simple to take a gym class, and it would be really silly if this prevented you from graduating. I took soccer twice because I loved it so much! You meet people that you would have never otherwise interacted with. Actually, one of my really good friends I met in gym class!

Shop smart, ladies, and most of all GOOD LUCK!
