Boston Strong: Ways to support those affected by the Boston Marathon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

After the tragic events of last week, you may be wondering how you can make a difference. Here are a few things that you can do to show your support for Boston and those affected:

1. Be supportive to all your friends and family members

People handle tragedy differently. Some people may have been really shaken by the events and may need your support during this tough time. Now is the time to show them that you care—and don’t belittle their feelings. What happened was scary, and their feelings are 100 percent valid.

2. One Fund Boston

Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino created a fund to support the families affected by this tragedy. In the first week, they raised over $20 million. Donating to this fund can help out the families directly!

3. Donate blood

Although the initial need for blood may be over, there was a lot of blood used last week.  This blood will need to be replaced, and some of the victims will need additional surgeries, and therefore additional blood, in the weeks to come. If you can, donate blood and help make a difference on a more personal level.

4. Boston tribute tee

Adidas has created a tee from which all the proceeds will go to the One Fund. You can buy one here.

5. B Strong hat

Similarly, 47 Brand has created the “B Strong” hat. The proceeds will all also go to the One Fund Boston. You can purchase one here.

6. Other ways

There are several other charities that you can donate to. Go to CNN for more information.

Do what you can, and show your support for Boston, because remember: We are Boston Strong.

She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
