Beyond the Brandeis Bubble: Breakfast at Sofra Bakery & Cafe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Everybody knows those groggy weekend mornings that follow nights spent staying up way too late.  A couple weeks ago, my suitemates and I were having one of those mornings. As we slowly emerged from our rooms, wrinkled and puffy eyed, good mornings quickly transformed into chatter about food.  Nobody felt like cooking, and the idea of omelets from Sherman wasn’t exactly piqing our interest.  I suggested we try Sofra Bakery & Cafe. None of us had been, but I had heard good things. One twenty minute drive later, we had arrived to Sofra’s Cambridge location.

Upon arrival, we were lucky enough to nab one of the few spots in the lot next to Sofra. And once inside the cozy and crowded cafe we were once again lucky to grab a table just as another group of diners were leaving. The handwritten menu, which features Mediterranean inspired cuisine (think Greek, Turkish and Lebanese), hung over a counter display of decadent hand pastries and pies. I settled on the Turkish Breakfast and homemade chai tea. My friends and I got up in waves to order at the counter so as not to lose our table. The friendly man behind the counter who took my order told me I was ordering the last Turkish breakfast of the morning. I couldn’t help but think I was having a particularily fortuitous day.

The day only improved when a short wait later, my name was called and I headed back up to the counter to claim my meal. It looked absolutely drool-worthy! Fried feta cheese, a poached egg wrapped in a nest of crispies, greek yogurt with quince sauce, and delicate slices of persian cucumber–could it get any better? The taste didn’t let me down either. My hot and creamy chai was the perfect way to wash down the sweet and savory flavors of my meal. Once my plate was licked clean, I headed back to the counter once more to try a pistacio baclava inspired pasty. Again, it was delicious.

All in all, Sofra was the perfect way to turn around a slow morning and get off campus with friends.

I am a double major in Anthropology and International/Global Studies with a minor in Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation at Brandeis University.
