The 3 Types of Friends You’ll Have Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

During the first month of freshman year, everyone is on the search for the same thing: friends. People that you can grab a meal with so you don’t have to face the terrifying reality and freshman social embarrassment of eating alone. People to explore the first sweaty frat parties with. People who will go to that first club meeting with you so you don’t have to face the intimidation of going alone. Regardless of what you are doing with the first friends you make in college, everyone you meet seems like someone that will be your future best friend. Sadly, you will quickly realize that these first friends might not be “your people.” These are the three types of friends you’ll make at the beginning of freshman year.

The Dorm Friends

The first people you’ll meet. They live on your floor — they’re convenient. Although the accessibility to these friends is an advantage, you will soon realize it’s unhealthy to spend all of your time with those you live with. You will slowly drift apart as time persists, but they will always be the people you can have deep, late night talks with, and will always be a friendly face in the hall.

The person you think will be a close friend, but you quickly realize they definitely will not be

Maybe this person is in one of your classes, or a mutual friend. Or maybe you meet them while studying in the library. They seem really cool, fun, and adventurous — someone you can relate to. After a few meals and parties with them, you quickly notice that you just don’t vibe with them. Your personalities simply aren’t compatible. You try to distance yourself from them and move on. They bring negative energy into your life.

The Best Friend

You click with this person instantly. It’s easy to open up to them, and within a week you feel like you’ve known them forever. They are your go-to rant buddy, meal buddy, and everything buddy. This is the person you do typical stupid college stuff with. You can eat a bag of chips and a carton of ice cream in the middle of the night with them and have no shame. It’s nice to have someone that understands you so well, and someone that is your freshman best friend.
