11 Unforgettable Moments of My Freshman Year at Brandeis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

In a week, my life as a college freshman will come to a bittersweet end.  Goodbye, expensive textbooks! Hello, hours with nothing to do! Goodbye, college chums. Hello, high school homies! From writing 10 page papers to baking Oreo-stuffed cupcakes, freshman year for me was filled with awesome, terrible, hilarious, and just plain weird moments.  Here are some of the most unforgettable:

1. Getting lost on campus

And then realizing a week later how small and navigable it actually is.

2. That time my professor was Batman

And the TAs? Robin, Catwoman, Mr. Penguin, and the Riddler.

3. The Midnight Buffet

Every year around finals time, Brandeis puts on a Midnight Buffet where students can run wild and eat to their heart’s content. Sorry, no pictures! What can I say, I was too busy fighting through crowds and shoving food into my mouth!

4. Crazy squirrels doing crazy things

In case you didn’t know, the squirrels at Brandeis are crazy with a capital C. They know how to peel candy wrappers and have been caught licking Gobstoppers, eating Butterfingers (pictured above), and even noshing on a chicken wing. Beware, these squirrels will eat anything!

5. Cooking with friends

Food and friends is one of the best combinations, ever. As freshmen in North Quad, we had easy access to the spacious Polaris Lounge/Kitchen, which we made sure to take full advantage of!

6. Dancing in Culture X

Culture X 2013 was a fantabulous show!  It was amazing to see all the hard work that went into it and the wide array of performances – from singing to stepping to all types of dancing. I had the privilege of performing a Taiwanese aboriginal dance with the wonderful Taiwanese Student Association (Holla! #TW4Lyfe). We spent several weeks practicing, and it was tons of fun!

7. Making the most of New England weather

Face it. We live in New England. Winters are bitter, cold, and generally suck. But sometimes when we get a load of snow dumped on us and classes are cancelled, things can get really, really fun!

8. That time I unknowingly stapled a raunchy SNL valentine intended for a friend as a joke to my final essay for UWS.

We’ll just leave it at that.

9. My first HOLI experience!

Holi is the Indian spring festival! Who knew that getting pelted with colorful powder could be so enjoyable? Thanks, Namaskar!

10. Cute puppy invasion

During midterms, Brandeis Pre-Vet Society sponsored a Dog Day Afternoon, where students could de-stress by interacting with cuties like Sheyn the Bichon Frise!

11. Journeying through the best city ever: Boston!!!!!

Beautiful sights to see, delicious food to eat, exciting events to go to…and it’s only a half-hour Crystal Shuttle ride away! When you feel like getting away from campus, Boston is a truly wonderful place for exploring, unwinding and making memories.

Andrea is a sociology major with minors in journalism and women's and gender studies. She is currently finishing her senior year at Brandeis University. She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
