11 Unforgettable Gilmore Girls Moments to Get You Ready for the Revival

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Warning: Gilmore Girls spoilers ahead. But honestly, if you haven’t seen the original series you need to get on that ASAP.

Fans of the hit comedy/drama series Gilmore Girls are eagerly anticipating November 25th. Why? Because the day after Thanksgiving, Netflix is releasing a mini-series called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which is a revival of the original show featuring the entire original cast! People who know me know that Gilmore Girls is my all-time favorite TV show, and I’ve been counting the days until this revival is released. In honor of it being a little over a week away, I thought I’d compile eleven of my favorite moments from the original series to get you excited to binge-watch the revival!

But first, watch this trailer for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life to get pumped (I’ve watched it maybe 15 times, no shame).

Ok, now that we’ve gotten sufficiently excited, let’s dive in to some of the moments from the original series that were truly unforgettable.

11. “Oy with the poodles already”

This iconic line has no real significance to the overall series plot, but every true Gilmore fan remembers this famous Lorelai catchphrase. Hopefully Lauren Graham will bust it out at least once in the revival!

10. Rory’s Going to Yale

In the beginning of the series, we see Rory studying hard in high school and trying to get into Harvard. However, she ends up choosing Yale, which happens to be the alma mater of her grandfather. When she reveals the big news, her grandparents are overjoyed, making this a fun and feel-good family moment.

9. “Because I love you, you idiot”

Rory and Dean initially broke up because she wasn’t able to say “I love you” to him. Then, when he shows up at her school, she has a chance to express her true feelings in this classic scene.

8. “I demand to go first”

When Richard Gilmore is put in the hospital for an emergency situation, we see an emotional side of his stone-cold wife Emily, who refuses to talk about her husband’s potential death, and “demands to go first.” This line is extremely emotional and memorable for all fans, especially given the fact that the actor who played Richard, Ed Herman, actually did pass away, and his death will be addressed in the revival series.

7. A Thousand Yellow Daisies

Way back in the beginning of the series, fans will remember that Lorelai had a brief engagement to Max Medina, an English teacher at Rory’s school. This unforgettable proposal, where Max fills the Independence Inn with 1,000 yellow daisies as a grand gesture, is incredibly romantic (even if Max is no Luke Danes).

6. Lorelai and Rory Reunite

The entire show revolves around Lorelai and Rory’s extremely close mother-daughter relationship. However, as true Gilmore Girls fans know, one of the most heartbreaking moments of the series is the stretch of time in which Lorelai and Rory do not speak. When they finally reunited, fans everywhere rejoiced.

5. Rory’s Chilton Graduation Speech

When Rory graduates high school as valedictorian, she delivers this emotional speech. The entire speech was amazing, but the part in which she addresses and praises her mother made me (and I’m sure many others) cry.

4. Luke and Lorelai’s First Kiss

Throughout the course of the show, fans were eagerly anticipating when Luke and Lorelai were finally going to get together. When they eventually shared their first kiss, it was just as magical as we had all hoped.

3. Lorelai and Luke’s Proposal

This unconventional proposal is sudden and unexpected, but perfect. Fans of the series will remember this moment well.

2. Lorelai sings “I Will Always Love You”

To celebrate Rory’s graduation, she and her mother hit a local bar to do some karaoke and enjoy their night. What starts off as a fun joke between mother and daughter turns into a meaningful and symbolic moment as Lorelai notices Luke slip into the back of the bar.

1. “You Jump, I Jump, Jack”

This is one of the most memorable moments of the entire series, and especially in Rory and Logan’s relationship. Rory is only just getting to know Logan, but she is convinced by him to participate in a Life and Death Brigade stunt. Some of the most iconic lines from the series come from this moment, such as: “People can live a hundred years without living for a minute.” Overall, this is my absolute favorite moment from the series.
