The Need To Know On Piercings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bradley U chapter.

Thinking about getting a new piercing? Then you’ve found the right place. For someone who has seven of the most common piercings, I can give you some pain levels as well as helpful tips to make your body-mod journey a little easier. Keep in mind that pain tolerances are different for everyone.

1. Regular Ear lobe piercings (1/10)

Regular lobe piercings are probably the very first piercings that most people get. Many of us got them at such a young age because they are the perfect starters. Regular lobe piercings take the least amount of time to completely heal. They can be done anywhere and are low maintenance in terms of the cleaning process. The pain level is pretty low when getting them initially. It feels like a little pinch, and depending on the thickness of your earlobes, you may not even feel it at all. To properly care for this piercing, use the solution provided and move the jewelry a little to work it in there.

2. Second hole piercings (1.5/10)

The second lobe piercings are essentially the same as the first one. They take about the same amount of time to heal, too. For the most part, they feel the same as the first one but keep in mind, as you move up on the ear, the pain level does rise. For this one, it is not that much of a rise depending on the placement and how far up the piercer goes, so there may or may not be an increase in pain. The same cleaning procedures go for these.

3. Nose piercings (2/10)

Nose piercings feel like a tiny pinch. The pain doesn’t come from the needle going through, it’s usually when putting the jewelry in. Do not twist and touch the piercing a lot; it will prevent it from healing completely with too much movement.

4. THe septum piercings (1/10)

Septum are pierced in the “sweet spot” in the front of the nose. That sweet spot is similar to an earlobe. The most notable thing about this piercing is the clamps. Most people say those are what makes the piercing hurt. The healing on this is pretty easy. The only downfall is that it has a bad smell on it. The smell will improve over time with proper cleaning and good-quality jewelry.

5. Eyebrow (5/10)

The eyebrow piercing hurts a little more depending on your anatomy. The eyebrow is a surface piercing and requires a little meat to stay in place. The amount of skin/meat used to pierce it will also determine the longevity of the piercing and whether it rejects or not. The best cleaning practices are to clean it when cleaning your face so you never forget. Also, do not move it a lot so that it heals properly. Moving it too much will cause it to migrate.

6. Tongue piercing (0/10)

Contrary to popular beliefs, the tongue piercing hurts the least when first pierced. Some piercers numb the area but even without it, you won’t feel it puncture at all. The only thing that you may feel is the clamp (and only because it’s cold). The thing that is painful about the tongue piercing is the first three days because of swelling. Helpful tips for this are to take round-the-clock ibuprofens and drink slushies.

7. Medusa or philtrum (5/10)

This is another piercing that depends on your anatomy and how thick your upper lip is. This piercing sits right above the lip. The worst part, again, is the clamps. This piercing has a relatively easy healing process. The swelling is a lot but just like the tongue piercing, a lot of ibuprofen and ice will help.
