A Fashion Review of the 2022 Met Gala

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bradley U chapter.

The 2022 Met Gala came and went this year. If it weren’t for Instagram, I definitely wouldn’t have even noticed it happened already. As I’ve just made clear, I am not someone that follows the newest fashion trends. Truthfully, I think some fashion designers go way overboard when it comes to making a statement. For me, I want my outfits to be put together, but lean more towards being functional. With the Met Gala being this past Monday, May 2, I have decided to discuss some of my favorite and least favorite wardrobe choices. Each year the Met Gala chooses a theme that the celebrities are supposed to embrace through their outfit; this years theme was “The Gilded Age.” This era can be best explained as a modern take on 19th-century’s White Tie dress code.

Olivia Rodrigo

Personally, I believe her outfit was a very simple way of fitting into the theme and it still looks stunning. Her butterfly clips in her hair convey part of 90s’ fashion that has now started to become a trend again. Her long gloves fit the Gilded Age, along with the big rings and off-the-shoulder sleeves. Her shoes fall into the modern part of the theme. All in all, I think she did a great job of intertwining both modern fashion and the fashion of the Gilded Age. I would have to say this is one of my favorites.

Kim Kardashian

If you haven’t heard by now, Kim Kardashian wore a dress that actually belonged to Marilyn Monroe. I understand the sentiment behind the tribute; however, I feel she did not do the look justice. Not that Kim Kardashian needed to look exactly like her, but the amount of changes she had to make to her appearance to even slightly resemble Marilyn Monroe takes away from both herself and Monroe’s individuality. For starters, Kardashian followed an unhealthy crash diet in order to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks in order to fit the dress. She also dyed her hair blonde and slicked it back in a typical Kim K way. In my opinion, she shouldn’t have worn the dress. I mostly believe this because it makes me nervous of how much could have gone wrong. I mean if she would have ripped the dress, that would be a priceless original dress that would have been ruined forever.

cara delevingne

This look was the perfect look to incorporate the theme, but also hold true to her individuality. The details and style of the jacket and pants tie in the theme, while the shoes and the concept of a woman wearing pants instead of a dress highlights Cara Delevingne’s personality. In addition to her statement of wearing pants, she also removed her jacket to show glittery body jewelry and gold pasties covering her nipples. For me, this just adds to how badass she really is.

irina shayk

I don’t even know where to begin with this. I cannot come up with a single explanation to how this outfit fits the theme. To me, it just gives off intense biker vibes with the all leather outfit. It would be one thing if the articles of clothing were similar to the clothing of the Gilded Age and they were just made out of leather to add to modernization of the theme. However, that is not the case. The look is that of a fancy all black leather biker suit.

maye musk and elon musk

Both Elon Musk and his mother, Maye Musk, I believe knocked it out of the park at the Met this year. Her dress and jewelry fit perfectly to the theme and she maintained a look of elegance. I believe everything about Elon Musk’s suit and bowtie fits the theme just as well as his mother’s does. I don’t have a lot to say about them due to the fact that they really nailed the theme.

gwen stefani

Honestly, I’m disgusted at her outfit for this Met Gala. I mean a neon green prom style dress, really? Her look gives off the the vibes that she had the dress picked out before the theme, but still wanted to wear it. I truly am at a loss for words. I also can’t say much about her look, but for the polar opposite reason of the Musks. Gwen Stefani completely butchered this year’s theme.

Billie Eilish

Another complete success of an outfit at this year’s Met. I think her gothic victorian vintage ensemble perfectly embodied her personality and the theme within one outfit. Her dress is the perfect expression of the Gilded Age theme. She didn’t even have to tweak the theme too much in order to match her vibes.
