Since the election, I have been in a state of grief. I know I am not the only one who legitimately fears another Trump presidency. Even from my privileged position (I’m white, I go to college in a blue state), I know that I and the people I love are about to be targeted by this administration. I’m not gonna tell you about Project 2025, there’s enough articles about that already.Â
But however bad it feels, inaction is not the solution. In the wake of the election, I have been seeing many left-leaning people taking to social media talking about how we need to “get organized.” Now, community organizing is great. But it is difficult, a full time job, and more importantly, something people have already been doing. Instead of getting online, I recommend that we open our wallets (if we are in the financial decision to do so). Donations help people who know how to fight injustices fight them more effectively, and help those most vulnerable materially. I know I already have, and you should too.Â

Additionally, take a look in your own hometown. There are probably organizations doing great work that you’re not even aware of. Maybe there’s a harm reduction group, or a food bank you haven’t had to use. Helping people locally is one of the best things you can do when people at higher levels of power want to slash budgets and cut services. It is going to get bad out there. But that doesn’t mean we have to stay helpless or hopeless.
