Who I Wanted and Predicted to Win the Big Four at the Grammys vs Who Actually Won

The Grammys were on Sunday, February 5th and there is discourse about who won and if it was a good pick. I decided to do a breakdown of my opinions for the Grammys and why, so I am doing the big four, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist.

Best New Artist

Who I wanted: I wanted either Noah Kahan or Gracie Abrams to win, they are the two out of that category that I listen to the most and I thought it would be cool for either of them to get it

My prediction: I predicted either Noah Kahan or Coco Jones to win, I feel like they were pretty big this year and their music is pretty good so I thought they had a chance

Who won: The winner is Victoria Monét, and I am very happy that she is finally getting her flowers and recognition. She has been in the game for a while and it makes me happy to see her win this award. She is also the second black woman in a row to win this award with last year’s winner being Samara Joy which I think is pretty cool.

Song of the Year

Who I wanted: I wanted “Vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo to win. I really like the song and I thought it was a strong lead single for her sophomore album, it is very vocally challenging and does not sound too radio-like, but enough to where it was popular outside of her fans.

My prediction: I predicted either “Vampire”, or “Kill Bill” by SZA. I thought those three had a good chance and it was a toss-up between the two and I honestly would have been fine with any of them winning. Both were very popular last year by two very good artists and both are very deserving of the Grammy.

Who won: “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish won. It’s not a bad song by any means, but it had won a lot of awards with the Barbie movie that I thought they would give it to a non-soundtrack song. I’m not disappointed with the outcome at all though.

Record of the Year

Who I wanted: “Vampire” and “Kill Bill” are two songs that were all over 2023 and I felt like they had the potential to win. I really like both songs and both artists.

My prediction: I predicted “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift to win because ROTY is based on sound rather than song writing and Taylor is very popular with the Grammys and with “Anti-Hero” being very popular as well, so I figured they would give it to her.

Who won: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus won, I will be honest, I’m not a big fan of this song. Nothing against Miley, but I think it does not match up to her 2020 album, so I was a little disappointed with the result, but on the other hand I am glad Miley is getting Grammys finally.

Album of the Year

Who I wanted: I wanted either “Guts” by Olivia Rodrigo, or “SOS” by SZA. I felt like those albums were key to 2023, and I think these are the best albums for each of the artists respectively. I feel like they each got bigger through these albums, and they both deserve it.

My prediction: I predicted those two albums or “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd” by Lana Del Rey. All three were huge this year, and I expected any of the three to get the award.

Who won: “Midnights” by Taylor Swift won the most coveted Grammy of the year. This project is definitely in the bottom half of Taylor’s discography for me and I did not think this album surpassed that many of the albums that were nominated. It is also a weak album to break the record for most AOTY awards in my opinion.

All of this is solely my opinion and this does not reflect my views on the artist as a person, just on the music they produced this year. I believe that the majority of the categories were close races and that there could have been multiple winners per category, and that expands out of the top four that I just wrote about.
