Jason Aldean released his latest album, Songs About Us, on Friday, April 24th. The title track includes a duet with another popular country music artist, Luke Bryan. I am very thankful for my Apple Music subscription because Jason Aldean had pre-released ten songs via Apple Music! Those ten songs were; “Drinking About You”, “Don’t Tell On Me”, “How Far Does A Goodbye Go”, “Dust on the Bottle” (a duet with David Lee Murphy), “Easier Gone” (duet with Brittany Aldean), “Help You Remember”, “What’s A Little Heartache”, “Hard To Love You”, “Her Favorite Color”, and “Lovin’ Me Too Long”! The songs that I had on ultimate reply were prior to the album release were: “What’s A Little Heartache”, “Help You Remember”, “Easier Gone”, “Her Favorite Color”, and “Don’t Tell On Me”! Since the release, I have been loving the songs; “One Last Look” and “Good Thing Going”.

My Rankings
20. Country into rock ‘n’ roll
Although country music is sometimes about a slow down lifestyle, “rednecks” and farmhands can have some grit and fight like what you would typically hear in a rock ‘n’ roll song. This song reminds me of Aldean’s hit, “Try That In A Small Town”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Never know what’s gonna happen on a backroad/If you’re gonna back talk, better have some backbone/Might’ve heard that we take it slow/So listen up if you don’t know”
“The dirt covered steel toes we got on/Kick it way out here til Tuesday’s gone”
19. Songs About us
This is the title track to the album! It is performed as a duet featuring Luke Bryan. The lyrics talk about being able to relate to mainstream media and overall country music. In the lyrics they name top older country artists that sang about small town and rural country lifestyles.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Two lanes and tailgates and one caution light/Man, don’t that sound just like/Songs about us, songs about livin’”
18. lovin’ me too long
When reading this title, I expected this to be about a breakup with lyrics about how she loved him for too long and is over the relationship. However, that is not the case. This song is a love song! It’s about how she has adapted to his lifestyle because they have been together for so long and they have a nice routine. This song gives hints of his old music, for instance: “Bad” and “She Likes It”. The last lyric down below I feel is a perfect reference to his song, “Camouflage Hat”. In “Camouflage Hat”, Aldean also references his “old flannel”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Smiling at me like, baby, you’re mine/In my old flannel shirt looking so damn fine”
“Got your long hair falling out the back/Of my faded ol’ camouflage cap”
17. backroads of my memory
This song reminds me of overthinking, as a chronic overthinker myself. It also heavily references reminiscing on the past, more specifically old memories. An older song of his that has the same vibes is “Dirt Road Anthem”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Some things are always there everytime I drive by/On the backroads of my mеmory”
“On the backroads of my memory/There’s a couple turns I coulda made/Maybe missed all them dead ends/Kept a few friends”
16. hard to love you
Misleading title to me, I thought this would be a breakup song. However, this is a love song and it reminds me of “You Make It Easy”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“It ain’t hard to want to be the one who/You always think about/It ain’t hard to hang on/With every little thing that you do”
15. Dust on the bottle
“Dust on the Bottle” is originally by David Lee Murphy from 1994. On Aldean’s album Murphy is featured on this song which is pretty cool.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“There might be a little dust on the bottle/But it’s one of those things that gets sweeter with time”
14. fight a fire
Yet another love song. It also kind of reminds me of “She Likes It” and “Bad” from his previous albums. This song is predominantly about giving into to something or someone that is impossible to resist and you cannot tell no.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“It’s too late now/Ain’t no way in hell I wanna put it out/Gotta let it roll, gotta let it burn down to the ground”
“You can’t fight somethin’ wild like her/You can’t fight a fire”
13. anytime soon
Our first breakup song of the album! This song is relatable, especially after a recent breakup. Reminds me of a precursor to “Any Ole Barstool”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Tryna put us on ice/Couple shots at a time/But nothin’s stronger than memory”
“Don’t get me close enough/To gettin’ over you, I can’t even start/Every night it’s the same with a shot in the dark/How many rounds can a heart take/Tryna fight off a heartbreak?”
“That’s a battle that I’m bound to lose/’Cause they ain’t runnin’ out of whiskey/Anytime soon”
12. the high road
This song that reminds me of “Any Ole Barstool”, which is one of Aldean’s hits. This one feels more on the same pace as “Any Ole Barstool” since the lyrics reference, “I guess you heard I was pedal to the metal on a downhill slide” before singing “And I take the long way home” which are road metaphors. It is also a post-breakup song. Unlike some exes, Aldean says he is “taking the high road” along with other lyrics (listed below) which typically means he is not talking poorly about his ex and their past relationship. Another song that I am reminded of is “Whose Rearview”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“She’s in the fast lane, one way/Like a goodbye hurricane/Big city skyline goin’ down/She’s like the sunset, burnin’ red/Right foot full of lead”
“I’m doin’ 90 on a barstool, hundred proof/Lettin’ the neon and the whiskey do what they do”
“Ain’t gonna let a little tore apart, go and start/Another rumor in this town/Run her name right in the ground/Yeah, tonight I’m goin’ strong, ain’t blowin’ smoke/I’m takin’ the high road”
11. little hometown left
This song is so relatable when you come from a small town and move away. It’s mainly about how your roots are still inside of you and there is hometown values and memories in you no matter where you are now. As a Hannah Montana fan, this song reminds me a bit of “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home” from Hannah Montana: The Movie.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Long as that interstate runs back to where I came from/Yeah I know I got a place to slow it down when I need one/And I’ve been who I’ve been/But I know I’m gonna end up/Right where I’m supposed to be/Long as I got a little hometown left in me”
10. she’s why
Yet another reference to a “barstool” and a past breakup. Looking at the last lyric below, it reminds me of Brantley Gilbert’s song, “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do”, which also references how if you didn’t know that girl on their level that is why you don’t understand the hurt.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“If you see me on a barstool/Talkin’ like a damn fool/Don’t listen to a word I say”
“She’s why I’m someone I don’t know/Sittin’ here alone all broken gone enough to let go/She’s why I don’t wanna go home”
“If tonight’s lookin’ like I’m havin’ a little trouble/With goodbye, she’s why”
“Man you would understand/If you knew hеr like I did/That girl could stop you on a dime”
9. her favorite color
Spoiler alert: her favorite color is dirt. In the first lyric below, there is a slight reference to his song “Big Green Tractor”. I enjoy this song, I feel like dirt is a staple of blue color jobs and country lifestyle. Although dirt being drug in through the house can be frustrating, it does mean that your house is full of loved ones and that there has been good weather, which is so relatable.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Loves the green on my John Deere”
“It’s on my truck, it’s on my boots/On generations of my roots/I bring it home, I track it in/But it don’t bother her”
8. drinking about you
Another breakup song from the album. I love the instrumentals of this song.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Every time I think I’m gonna move on/Every time I think I’m gonna stay strong/It’s the same old lie in the midnight high/It’s the same old song ”
“If you want the truth, I ain’t over thinkin’/Ain’t over drinkin’ about you”
“There ain’t a place I can’t go/In the back in my mind/I try to lock thе door like the night beforе/But you fight your way inside/I can’t get over” you gettin’ over me”
7. how far does a goodbye go
First lyric below hits so hard because who hasn’t been ghosted when they thought that things were going well? I feel like this song fits so well, especially with songs mixed in from his past two albums (Macon and Georgia). This song is so relatable especially post relationship and during no contact. A song by Luke Combs that has a similar energy is “Going, Going, Gone”.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“I might’ve been alright if I’d seen her leavin’ comin’ (Leavin’ comin’)”
“Is she big sky, fast lane gone, got the horses runnin’?/Looks like I’m on the wrong side of ridin’ off into the sunset this time”
6. good thing going
About the sixth breakup song of this album. Aldean sings about knowing that this relationship and person were good for him, yet he is only realizing that fact now that she is leaving him.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“Yeah, she’s the type your mama likes/She keeps you hangin’ on/They say you don’t know what a good thing is until it’s gone/But right now, I’m findin’ out what they’re talkin’ about/I got a good thing goin’”
5. what’s a little heartache
Another relatable song. Who hasn’t said “what’s a little ____ gonna hurt?”, the don’t overthink about this now, just enjoy what is happening now and face the possible consequences later.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“What’s a little heartache gonna hurt?/What’s a little lonely when it comes to her?/She’s a kinda sunset a cowboy’d love to ride into”
4. don’t tell on me
I love how Aldean sings this! It is so relatable after breakups and during no contact seasons. Telling yourself not to talk about it because the only person that has to know your thoughts is you and telling others could lead to more problems.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“As far as everybody knows I’ve got a heart of stone/I might have bent but never broke, always been better on my own”
“I’ve been working hard to make it look like I’m okay/So don’t give me away, yeah”
“One more time tell me what to say to make ’em think I’m fine/’Cause we both know that I’m runnin’ out of lies”
3. help you remember
I am in tears. Relatable has never felt easier to say. In my personal life, my grandmother had dementia so hearing the last lyric (listed below) hit very close to home. Loving someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease is heartbreaking within itself, but once their memory starts to fade it hurts worse. The sentiment of wanting to help your loved one remember you and the amazing memories that you have made together is gut wrenching and so bittersweet.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“I know you’ve seen ’em all before/Oh, but I still show you pictures/Of waves crashin’ on the shore/From that trip out to Monterey”
“If we got in that truck right now/And drove out to watch that made-you-smile sunset?”
“Lord, I never thought I’d be/Missin’ someone right in front of me”
2. easier gone
Irony. This song is so ironic because it’s a breakup song performed as a duet with Aldean’s wife, Brittany. This song has been on repeat since it was released as a single. It is so relatable, especially the timing in which I saw it just coincided with my personal life so perfectly. A song that has the same energy is “Over You Again” from his Macon album.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“I wish I didn’t know your name/Wish you were just another stranger”
“It was easy to lie/To myself on a Friday night/When I wasn’t face to face with how good you look movin’ on/Yeah, you were easier gone”
1. one last look
Finally, not only my favorite breakup song from this album but also my favorite overall song! I have had this song on repeat since the album release! The relatability to this song is so high. Asking your ex to give one last look or sign that the breakup is hard on them like it is on you as well as the fact that they might not be over you yet.
My favorite lyrics from this song include:
“One last sign, this ain’t easy on you/Give me one last reason/For thinkin’ you’re havin’ second thoughts on leavin’/You ain’t afraid I might turn around, if you took/One last look”
