A Grammy award-winning artist has been doing more than just writing music that she hopes resonates with people all over the world. Olivia Rodrigo, who has been one of the biggest names in pop music since 2021, recently founded Daisy Chain Fields, an all-women music festival that celebrates the contributions of women in music. According to the event’s website, the festival, which was held Aug. 29 at Great Park in Irvine, California, works to ensure that girls and young people have access to information and support that they may not otherwise know how to find. Daisy Chain Fields has partnered with a variety of nonprofit organizations that work to advance and advocate for women and girls. All of the net proceeds from the festival went directly to these organizations.
Rodrigo has spoken in interviews about how the primary inspiration behind the festival was Lilith Fair, a traveling music festival launched in 1997 by Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan. The festival, which ran for three summers, was created out of McLachlan’s frustration towards industry executives at the time, as a lot of them felt that putting two female artists on a lineup wouldn’t sell. During Lilith Fair’s first summer, it outpaced Lollapalooza in both audience size and ticket sales.
Daisy Chain Fields held performances from popular artists such as Stevie Nicks, Chappell Roan, Doechii, as well as both Rodrigo and McLachlan. All of the artists in the festival’s lineup performed without compensation, putting an emphasis on the philanthropic impact of the event. Though this year’s festival is over, people can still make donations to any of the organizations listed on the festival’s website.
Daisy Chain Fields drew about 45,000 attendees and raised $20 million for its partnered organizations, and Rodrigo has indicated that she would like to make this an annual event.
