Since the beginning of time, black women have consistently remained impactful, from leading and organizing civil rights movements to aiding NASA in sending the first-ever American astronaut into space. Black women have continuously broke barriers in every industry.

Despite the severe effects of institutional racism and misogyny, black women have remained courageous in conquering insurmountable obstacles. Here are four black women you should know who made history recently in their respective fields of politics and entertainment we all should be raving about:

Ruth E. Carter

On March 12th, Ruth E. Carter made history by becoming the first Black woman to win two  Oscars. A long and awaiting substantial honor we all should be commemorating.

Ruth E. Carter won her Oscar for Best Costume Design for the popular Marvel film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Carter is no stranger to making history at the Oscars. In 2019, Ruth E. Carter made history by becoming the first black woman to win in the Best Costume Design category for her extraordinary work in “Black Panther.”

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

In June of 2022, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson made history by becoming the first Black woman to have a Supreme Court seat. We have all been waiting for the great honor of seeing black women’s representation on the nation’s highest court.

In honor of celebrating Women’s History Month, it is also noteworthy to highlight that this is the first time four women have a seat on the Supreme Court.

Andrea Campbell

On November 8th, 2022, Andrea Campbell became the first black woman to be elected as the Attorney General of Massachusetts. Campbell is also the first Black woman ever to retain a statewide office position in Massachusetts.

Another memorable celebration of Andrea Campbell is that she was the first Black woman to serve as the city council president of Boston city in 2018. Andrea Campbell’s resilience and dedication to her goals exemplify a black woman choosing to keep striving forward no matter what it takes. We all should be applauding Campbell’s representation in the role of Attorney General of Massachusetts.

Angela Bassett

For many years now, Angela Bassett has remained true to her artistry. From playing historic roles like Tina Tuner in the 1993 celebrated film “What’s Love Got to Do With It” to Stella Payne in the 1998 film “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” Angela Bassett has remained remarkable.

On January 10th of this year, Angela Bassett made history as the first Marvel actor to win a golden globe for their performance in a Marvel movie. Bassett won in the category of Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes. She won this esteemed honor for her role in the incredible film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Black women have always and always will break barriers set to hold them back. These four women and their massive accomplishments prove black women will continue to raise the bar in any industry gracefully.
