A Quick Guide to Running Races in Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

The ING New York City Marathon was this past weekend, and for those of you who are motivated by their 26.2 mile achievement, here’s a quick guide to running races in style.

If you are participating in a race for the first time, try a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles).  And if you are really up for a challenge, participate in a half marathon (13.1 miles) or do a marathon (26.2) like the one this past weekend.  So, now that you’ve decided to run, what’s a girl to wear?

There are a few essentials that are needed for any race. Depending on the weather, you can wear spandex capris or shorts.  Make sure you color coordinate with a tank top and sports bra. Of course you can’t forget sneakers – the most important part of the outfit!  Check out Runner’s World list of the “Top Shoes of 2013 (So Far)” here.

I suggest wearing a fanny pack to store some snacks and any other necessities you might need.

We all know how hard it is to run without good pump-up music so invest in an iPod holder that goes around your arm and good headphones.  I suggest a brand called yurbuds.  They are perfect for when you’re running.  Of course caring a water bottle is essential. There are many different ways for you to hold your water bottle.  You may want to invest in a belt that conveniently holds the bottle for you or one that slides onto your hands so it is easily accessible.
