The 86th Academy Awards will take place tonight, Sunday, March 2 at 8 p.m. broadcasted on ABC. Oscar night is commonly known as the biggest night in movies of the year and even fashion as many A-list celebrities take to the red carpet in show-stopping gowns and tuxedos. I mean, come on, you don’t even have to be that interested in the actual awards to want to see George Clooney, Matt Damon and Ryan Gosling looking extraordinarily handsome.
Though not everyone is up-to-date with their movie trivia, we’ve got all the information you need to know about this year’s Oscar night.
The HostEllen DeGeneres will host this year’s Academy Awards for the second time. The show is highly anticipated given her track-record of hosting the ceremony, as her first gig was in 2007. Memorably, DeGeneres maintained her kind and warm demeanor while still bringing an element of humor to the night. Check out her iconic vacuum skit below!
While last year’s host Seth McFarland certainly had a few laughs, many attendees were offended by the crude and mean-spirited nature of his jokes. This year, it looks like audiences won’t have to worry about that. In interviews leading up to Oscar night, DeGeneres claims that her main goal of the night is to calm everyone’s nerves with warm, jovial and comforting humor, as opposed to name-calling.
The PresentersWith the nominations become more and more competitive, only a extremely select few secure a place among the night’s festitives. While presenters certainly don’t suffer from the same nerves and pressure as the nominees, not everyone can be nominated and viewers love to see dozens of their favorite actors take the stage to present awards. Those who are both nominees and presenters are guaranteed their chance on the big stage and show off their red carpet looks.
Guests slated to appear at this year’s Oscars are Emma Watson, Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Kate Hudson, Anna Kendrick, Angeline Jolie, Matthew McConaughey, Jason Sudeikis and many more!Â
The NomineesThe nominees for Best Picture are all, of course, fantastic in their own ways, most experts see the race of the golden statue narrowed down to American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity.
Though the final results are always almost impossible to predict, most critics are calling for a Dallas Buyers Club sweep of both male acting categories with Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor and Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor. In his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, McConaughey began with “Alright, alright, alright,” the first line he ever spoke in a movie
It’s probable that Cate Blanchett will win Best Actress for her lauded role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, as she’s literally been winning every award this season, including some we’ve never even heard of before. However, the exciting part about the Academy Awards is that the award could literally go to any one of the nominees. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been known to be rather unpredictable so we’ll just have to wait and see!
At last year’s BAFTAs, Jennifer Lawrence’s acceptance speech (after winning Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook) began with a reference to the First Wives Club with “I beat Meryl!” While most viewers were confused because Meryl Streep wasn’t even nominated in the same category as Lawrence, they could definitely see that very thing happen tonight. Both nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Streep is up for her role in August: Osage County and Lawrence is up for her role in American Hustle.
