COACHELLA 2013: Fashion, Music & More

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

If you’re an avid music listener like me, you know that Coachella is one of the most popular summer music festivals held during the year. For those who aren’t familiar with Coachella, it’s an annual three-day music and arts festival founded by Paul Tollett that has been luring music fanatics annually since October 1999. In 2001the festival month was moved to April and has remained this way ever since.

The festival is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio California and features many music genres, including rock, indie, hip-hop and electronic music. It showcases popular and established artists, as well as emerging artists and reunited groups.  One of the great things about Coachella is that it gives back to the community.  A portion of the money collected from the selling of tickets and wristbands benefit the following charities: Indio Teen Center, Indio Senior Center, Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and the Desert Resource Center.

This year, the first round of the festival takes place the weekend of April 12-15 with the second round taking place the weekend of April 19-22.  Featured artists this year include The Stone Roses, Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, Of Monsters and Men, The xx, Franz Ferdinand, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Lumineers and many more. Coachella is a music festival unlike any other, with campers, “glampers,” ravers and celebrities comingling in a desert scene like something straight out of a Sting music video.

While Coachella is primarily a music festival, it is equally well-known as a place where people show off their unique personal style.  As the year’s first big festival, Coachella is the perfect place to spot the trends that will dominate this summer.  With so many types of music fans thrown together in the desert, you’re bound to spot some interesting style.  Don’t let the fringe fool you – Coachella is high fashion.

Spring/Summer 2013’s penchant for white has translated to the festival fields with Alessandra Ambrosio pairing a white top with neon pink shorts, while Kate Bosworth opted for an all-white outfit the second day of the festival.

I love going online to look at the different things my favorite celebs decide to wear at the festival! It’s great style inspiration. I usually cut out pictures of my favorite outfits and use them to make an inspiration board to both decorate my room and to give me ideas for my own every day outfits.  My personal favorite style inspirations at Coachella are Vanessa Hudgens and her gorgeous boyfriend, Austin Butler, as well as Alexa Chung, who’s got that British style icon thing going for her.

Kate Bosworth mixes an all-American preppy look with some grunge pieces and Diane Kreuger experiments with a twist of British punk on her traditionally classic style.

These women can never go wrong when it comes to their clothing choices, especially at Coachella.
