Best Halloween Movies and Specials for the Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

Halloween is just around the corner and one of the best ways to get in the mood is to watch films and/or television specials about Halloween. Here is a list of 5 different specials and movies that will get you in the Halloween spirit.

1. Hocus Pocus

This film is one of the Disney’s film I hear most about during this season. It stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy whom play 3 witches whom get resurrected by a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts’s. The movie may be a little cheesy and is not everyone’s cup of tea, but Is one that is definitely remembered and nostalgic to many college students.

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This 70’s musical cult classic is one that will be getting a live musical show on Fox on October 20th, is one that is definitely worth checking out at least once. The Rocky Picture Horror Show follows Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon), fiancés whom end up getting into car trouble and having to stay the night at a home of Dr. Frank N. Furter  (Tim Cury) along with a colorful cast of other members of the home. While the musical is very campy and may take a few viewings to really get into it, it Is a great musical, especially during the Halloween season.

3. It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown seems to have a special for everything and the Halloween special entitled “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” is one of the most classic ones. The special follows the Charlie Brown gang as they celebrate Halloween. Linus is trying to convince Sally the Great Pumpkin is real and Charlie Brown is having problems when trick or treating due to seeming to only get rocks instead of candy. While the special is very simple and only 30 minutes long, that is what makes it so great, memorable, and something all ages can enjoy.

4. Nightmare Before Christmas

This Tim Burton Claymation movie has to be one of the most memorable and best films that Tim Burton ever created. The story takes place in a town that is always celebrating Halloween, Jack enjoys it but feels like something is missing. After accidentally discovering the holiday of Christmas he begins to try to take the Christmas tradition over to Halloweentown which ends up inciting chaos that even includes the kidnapping of Santa Claus. This movie has amazing animation, memorable songs, and is great especially for Halloween day when you may feel yourself to get into the Christmas mood.

5. Then There Was Shawn Boy Meets World

While this is not technically a Halloween episode, it is one that parodies many horror movies and makes fun of different scary movie tropes. When Shawn, Topanga, Cory, and the gang end up getting detention they start to fear for their lives as the students in detention that night (and even Mr. Feeney) begin to get killed off one by one. Though it sounds very grotesque and possibly unsettling the episodes plays it mostly for laughs making it a fan favorite of Boy Meets World lovers. There is even a guest star role for Jennifer Love Hewitt in this episode. Even if you ae not too familiar with the Boy Meets World series, I definitely recommend giving this episode a look. It’s funny, spooky, and perfect for Halloween.
