According to scientists, the most depressing day of 2014 happened on January 20th. Nicknamed the even more depressing – blue Monday. Let’s best honest, Mondays in general are always pretty terrible, but January as a whole has a pretty bad rep.

There are the obvious reasons January isn’t a great month. Christmas is over and eating your weight in mince pies and cheese boards is no longer acceptable – you’re then bombarded with twitter posts of peoples new gym wear and daily workout updates (which 1. You couldn’t care less about, yet 2. Still makes you feel guilty).  The weather appears is in a constant s downpour – and of course even the days when the sky is crystal clear and you don’t take your umbrella, 10 minutes after leaving your house it is guaranteed to become a monsoon.  Just to add to this, back to Uni means the inevitable back to reality of work and exams – this back to work mentality is then made all the worse by all the statuses of those being accepted onto graduate schemes and you yourself realising your future prospects are looking pretty thin on the ground at the moment.

All in all, January appears bleak.

But there are of course ways in which to perk you up and try and turn January into a (relatively) good month.

First and foremost – shopping, January is full of sales and you have the opportune moment to snap up all those clothes you wanted after your loan had run out but you had to sacrifice in order to buy necessities like food. Plus there is little better in life than after trawling through the hideously busy Topshop sale finding a boutique top reduced from £56 to £10 – basically gold dust. Missguided are also capitalising on the January blues and are currently running a promotion code of ‘BLUEFREE’ for you to indulge in some internet shopping.

You can also stave off the depression of January by planning your summer; there is nothing better than booking your holiday to shake off the January blues. Even if booking it is not possible, just the planning will be enough excitement to keep going. Whether it’s a girly holiday to Ibiza or more exotic travel to Asia, get organising!

Although it’s trying its best to ruin your mood, don’t let January ruin your optimism. Set yourself some much needed goals that need to be achieved before the months out and it will fly by!

Failing that, just remember the majority of January is nearly over and we’re still here. February is within touching distance and the blues will be a distant memory..
