Damage-Free DIY For Your Uni Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Birmingham chapter.

When you head off to university, your living circumstances are suddenly downgraded. Instead of having a whole house to spread your things around, you are given a box room the size of a large cupboard in which to spend a large proportion of your time. Even if you move into a student house at some point during the 3 years, you will still find yourself in your room for sleeping, studying and relaxing. This is why it is important to be creative when decorating this little space.

Damage deposits and moody landlords can often get in the way of any truly spectacular interior decorating, so students often resort to blu-tacking the walls from head-to-toe in free ‘snapfish’ photos. Deciding I wanted a more grown up look this year, I discovered a new trend from Japan called Washi tape, which has given my room a classy new makeover. Washi tape is perfect for students and indecisive decorators, as it is damage-free and peels off just like masking tape. It comes in hundreds of different colours and patterns and can be bought on ebay for only £1.50 a roll!

Simply googling ‘Washi tape decorating’ will give you loads of ideas on how this tape can transform living spaces. I have seen people cover entire walls with strips of the tape to create a striped pattern, something that is guaranteed to take you hours but is also perfect procrastination during exam period!

I decided to frame some photos, posters and pictures I cut out of magazines, but soon I am going to let myself loose on the rest of the house with my remaining rolls!
