Wellness Wednesday: How to Keep Your Dorm Room Germ Free

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

The city of Boston experienced a crazy and wild flu epidemic this winter, spreading all over Massachusetts! With Bentley only miles from the city it can be difficult to stay healthy in communal living! Following these simple steps will increase your chances of staying germ free!

Avoid sharing food, drinks, or beauty products with friends!

This can be difficult especially with your roommates, but it’s important to remember that most common germs are spread this way! Safe practices include: don’t share chapstick, keep your toothbrush and toothpaste away from others, and avoid drinking from a shared container – especially at parties! You never know whose germs you could be getting!

Don’t leave food or silverware on your desk, table, or countertop!

With class, clubs, and activities we often forget to wipe down our desks. But we tend to leave all sort of abstract items around, leaving them to collect dust, dirt and germs! All things that need to go in order to maintain healthy living! So take those few seconds to wipe down your desk, table and countertop with a disinfectant wipe!

Create a cleaning schedule with your roommates!

Cleaning will be much more fun and enjoyable if you evenly split up the tasks between your roommates! Assign a task for each day of the week and create a checklist to ensure nothing is missed. Place it on the door where everyone can see! Put on some Beyoncé, get cleaning, and your room will be germ free in no time!

Frequently empty your trash!

It’s easy to put off taking out your trash for days, but it’s important to empty them daily! Always use trash bags to limit your contact with the items inside.

Disinfect the faucet and sink often!

Washing your hands and brushing your teeth can leave some nasty germs behind! The easiest way to keep this area clean is to leave disinfecting wipes or spray beneath the sink! This makes for easy cleaning whenever needed!

And most importantly…

Wash your hands multiple times a day!

We often forget the many of millions things we touch throughout the day! Washing your hands is the most effective way for you to prevent spreading your own germs as well as in taking others! Be sure to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, and be sure to dry your hands with disposable paper towels instead of reusable hand towels! Keep an antiseptic hand gel in your bag for when you’re on the go.

Stay healthy!
