Tyler Winther, ’13- The Winner of Bentley Beats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Announcing the winner of Bentley Beats, Tyler Winther! Tyler is a Junior majoring in Marketing. Not only is he an approachable person who is happy to share his love for DJ’ing, but his music can quickly fill any dance floor and needless to say, we’re excited to see what he’ll have in store for us to set the tone for Spring Day 2012!

HCB: What inspired you to begin your DJ career?
TW: I used to play Bass in a band for 5 years. We started getting looked at by labels but that’s when the wheels came off. When the band broke up, I was lost for a bit trying to think of how I could continue to express myself musically.

In the summer of 2009 I went with a group of friends to the Electric Daisy Carnival. I stood front row at a small side stage and watched a then unknown Avicii (Tim Berg) spin his first major set in the U.S. After seeing him and a slew of other acts like Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Dada Life, Deadmau5, and the debut of Swedish House Mafia, I fell in love with the music.

Soon after the concert I bought my first controller. It was a cheap but comparable alternative to turntables and would allow me to travel and play anywhere. I loved being able to have a full sound without having to deal with the ego’s and drama of a band. I could express myself musically, without any drama and do it entirely on my own terms. It became an addiction.

HCB: How do you define being a DJ?
TW: Dj’ing truly is the art of manipulating emotion through music. Not everyone can do it and even fewer can do it well. I have been lucky enough to learn from the best and to have a predisposition to performing live. I’m still learning the art myself, but if you’re able to get into your mix, the crowd will get into as well.

HCB: What has been the most exciting experience you have had in your career so far?
TW: When I first started DJ’ing two years ago, I told myself that by senior year I would be DJ’ing on Spring Day. When I heard that I had earned a spot to perform this year I flipped out, because not only had I accomplished my goal, but I had done so a year ahead of schedule. Spring Day 2012 will be my most exciting experience mainly because of the personal attachment I have to the event.

HCB: What are your plans for the future?
TW: I have big plans for the future and they’re starting to come to life as we speak. I’ve recently been signed by Flavor Media, one of the top promotional companies in Boston to both promote for and DJ the top venues in Boston. In addition to playing clubs I’m looking to release some original productions by Christmas!!

HCB: Where outside of Bentley can people hear your music?
TW: You can come see me play every Tuesday at The New Landing on Moody Street. You can Also Come to Flavor Media’s: Cinco De Mayo Booze Cruise in Boston for my City debut.

Other than that, go to my Facebook page or my soundcloud page to hear all my mixes and original productions.

HCB: What should we expect this Spring Day from you?
TW: Bentley demands the best and in voting for me to perform you will get the best. I am going to provide the ultimate soundtrack to the best day of the year.

One last thing:
Bentley truly is “Her Campus”…For real though, girls run all aspects of this school. I couldn’t be happier to have you all as fans!
