Mariela Spillari ’10, Macy’s Parade & Entertainment Group

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Hello collegiates! Meet Mariela Spillari! Mariela graduated from Bentley University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. She was born in Guatemala but grew up in New York. Mariela moved back to New York City and now works for Macy’s in their Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Entertainment group. When it comes to her favorite part about working for Macy’s, she said, “the exposure to different audiences because we cover events on a national level and have the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country. I get to see the local charm of each store and how the brand is perceived in small towns and big cities.” Mariela has a couple favorite experiences at Macy’s; the first is planning the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year it will be her fourth parade and she said, “I am intricately involved and it feels great to be part of a holiday tradition.”

The second experience she cherishes most was working at the 1st metro Macy’s opening in the Bronx at A plaza. She said, “It was really incredible because people travelled over an hour to Herald to the Macy’s, but now it’s a 10 minute drive with a communal feel. There was interaction with customers and shopping with families that was tailored to that community. They were such an appreciative groups of customers and they loved the special events that were highlighted for kids.” When asked what advice she’d give to Bentley students, she said, “Constantly improve how you market yourself to potential employers and your peers because you never know when an opportunity might come up.”
