Grammy Awards: Complete Performance Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards definitely didn’t disappoint. Here’s a recap of every musical performance.

Kendrick Lamar, “XXX” and “King’s Dead”

Of course, the show started off strong with a Kendrick Lamar performance. Kendrick is known for the powerful messages in his music, so this performance that highlighted gun violence and racism in America wasn’t a surprise. He went on to win multiple awards during the night—no surprise here.

Lady Gaga, “Joanne”

Of course she was wearing those wings, because Lady Gaga was an angel on earth with this performance. This multi-talented queen shined on the piano, and her voice is definitely goosebumps-worthy.

Sam Smith, “Pray”

Even though I got total doctor vibes from his long white coat, Sam Smith was angelic as per usual. His smooth-as-butter voice combined with the gospel choir were ingredients for a beautiful performance, so it was no wonder everyone in the audience looked at him like proud parents when it was over.

Little Big Town, “Better Man”

Highlights of this one were the wind and smoke machines, and sparkly coordinated outfits. It was an overall solid performance, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, “Despacito”

Well, of course we needed everyone’s favorite Summer 2K17 bop. Just when you thought you got it out of your head, it’s back, back again. The dancers were fun, and I loved the nightclub vibes.

Childish Gambino, “Terrified”

I love Childish Gambino, and this performance was smoooooooth. He wore that white suit WELL if I do say so myself. The best part? THAT LITTLE BOY. Mini Childish Gambino stole the scene, no question.

Pink, “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”

Let me just say that I am obsessed with her jeans, white t-shirt, barefoot ensemble. The performance was so simple, but her voice is so beautiful. Also, the sign language interpreter was an amazing feature.

Bruno Mars and Cardi B, “Finesse”

This was the performance I was most excited for, and it definitely wasn’t a disappointment. Cardi B is everyone’s queen right now, and it’s impossible not to smile while watching her. Also…Bruno’s. Dance. Moves. YES.

Sting & Shaggy, “Englishman in New York” and “Don’t Make Me Wait”

This wasn’t a bad performance, but I’m definitely not the only one who couldn’t stop thinking about what a strange combo it was.

Eric Church, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris, & Chris Stapleton, “Tears in Heaven”

Such a beautiful tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting this past October. Chilling.

Kesha, “Praying”

After a moving speech about the Time’s Up Movement by Janelle Monae, Kesha took the stage with Bebe Rexha, Cyndi Lauper, Camila Cabello, and an all-women choir. A serious display of girl power, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

U2, “Get Out of Your Own Way”

Camila Cabello introduced this performance with a moving speech about American Dreamers. Then, U2 performed on a stage right next to the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River. This was seriously so powerful.

Elton John & Miley Cyrus, “Tiny Dancer”

This is the duo we never knew we needed. Elton John was as iconic as ever, and had a huge smile as he watched Miley sing so beautifully. And can we talk about that gorgeous princess dress? Seriously stunning. We’re glad you’re back, Miley.

Ben Platt, “Somewhere”

Dear Evan Hansen, thank you for this performance. From, all of us. I personally loved this Broadway tribute at the Grammys, and Ben Platt is so stinkin’ cute I just want to pinch his cheeks.

Patti LuPone, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”

This performance felt a little out of place to me, but it was still so pretty! But what was with the 5 microphones?

SZA, “Broken Clocks”

SZA is my queen, so I was so excited for this. She didn’t disappoint, and I am so happy for her. I’m gonna go play her album on repeat now.

Logic, Alessia Cara, & Khalid, “1-800-273-8255”

Not only are these singers insanely talented, but this song is so powerful and has had a positive and lasting impact on millions of people. This message is so important, and the song deserves to have the Grammy Awards as a platform. They were also joined on stage by survivors of suicide attempts. So powerful. So good. I’d have to say this was my favorite performance of the night.

Bentley University 2019
Native New Yorker Brooke Camarda has had her eclectic share of jobs—from the runways of NYFW to the haunted hallways of NYZ Apocalypse. Commonly known by her alter ego of Wonder Woman, there's no task or adventure that the skydiving-enthusiast isn't willing to take on. She loves typography and cappuccinos almost as much as she loves her (very) big family, and is thrilled to be writing for Bentley University's chapter of Her Campus.
