Emily’s Wednesday Matinee: We Bought a Zoo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Ever since I was little, I had a serious passion for watching movies. There is just something about movies and the big screen that has always captivated me. Whether it is the classic Nora Ephron romance, the indie film making waves at film festivals, or a huge blockbuster hit, I have a passion for it all. I am taking my love for the stories on the big screen and hitting the internet scene, so grab your popcorn and a take a seat for Emily’s Wednesday Matinee.

We Bought a Zoo has got to be one of my all-time favorite family movies. Having premiered during Christmas week in 2011, We Bought a Zoo may now just be a movie you somewhat remember wanting to see, but never actually got around to it. However, you should stop what you are doing, retrieve that memory, and go see it right away!  This classic family favorite leaves its audience experiencing all the feelings and promises to not disappoint. Directed by Cameron Crowe, We Bought a Zoo centers around Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) and his two children, Dylan and Rosie, who are looking for a fresh start after the loss of Mrs. Mee. Benjamin decides to purchase an old zoo that is in need of renovation.

We then follow Benjamin and family along their trials and tribulations of trying to find the new beginning they so desperately need while attempting to preserve the struggling zoo and its super cute animals. You can’t help but fall in love with the Mee family, head zoo keeper Kelly, and the rest of the zoo workers as they fight against time and snarky zoo inspector Walter Ferris to open the zoo in time for summer. Along the way, the audience comes to understand the importance of courage and family as the Mee family tries to figure out life without a mother. You cannot help but root for the Mee family and the zoo community as they try to beat the odds and experience the ultimate modern day adventure.  In addition to a killer soundtrack, We Bought a Zoo gives a hopeful message that with a little faith and a whole lot of elbow grease, anything is possible. This movie is through and through a winner, and besides, who doesn’t love a little Matt Damon in their life?
