Emily’s Wednesday Matinee: Kate Winslet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Kate Winslet is pretty flawless; we have all loved her in her countless on-screen performances. She is a very diverse actress who is incredible on screen. Plus, she is best friends with Leonardo DiCaprio-it doesn’t get much better than that. In honor of the beloved Kate Winslet receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this past Monday, I found it only fitting to take a look at what I consider her top five performances.

5. Labor Day (2014)

Released this past January, Labor Day tells the story of depressed and shut-in single mother, Adele, and her son Henry. The two come across an escaped convict and provide him with shelter as the police search for him. Kate Winslet, who beautifully portrays the struggling mother who tries to find life again, received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.

4. The Reader (2008)

Winslet won the Academy Award for Best Performance for an Actress is a Leading Role for this performance. She stars as a World War II war criminal that is on trial for her participation in actions at a Nazi camp. This movie is full of dark secrets, and Winslet makes you believe every single one. You absolutely cannot miss this movie.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Earning herself both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination, Kate Winslet kills it in her performance as the free-spirited Clemetine Kruczynski who has her memory erased after breaking up with her boyfriend, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey). After Joel also has his memory erased, the two meet again, as if it were for the first time. Will these two quasi-former lovers be able to make a fresh start? This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it is definitely one of Winslet’s best performances.

2. Titanic (1997)

Who could ever forget the girl who stole Jack Dawson’s heart away? Kate Winslet’s performance as Rose DeWitt Bukater is undoubtedly one of her most memorable roles. Plus, you have to hand it to her, she definitely pulls off the red hair.

1. Revolutionary Road (2008)

Reunited with Leonoardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet stars as April Wheeler. She is married to Frank Wheeler (DiCaprio), and the film follows the couple as they progress through time and try to find the answers to how their lives became everything they promised it never would, repetitive and full of limitations. Winslet’s performance is absolutely flawless.

Congratulations to Kate Winslet on all that she has accomplished and on all that is still to come! What are some of your favorite Kate Winslet roles?
