Emily’s Wednesday Matinee: The Costner Comeback

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Kevin Costner—the man responsible for giving us Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, The Guardian, Tin Cup, For the Love of the Game, and The Bodyguard, seems to have slightly disappeared from the overwhelming success he once experienced. Such a very versatile actor in such versatile roles has not acted in a solid leading role in a good decade. However, there is a glimmer of hope in the near future that we may just be on the brink of a Kevin Costner comeback. Do I dare to even believe that it could be true?

Over winter break, I tended to spend a good portion of my time at the movies, catching up on all the movies I wanted to see while away at school. I think most people would agree with me when I say that movie trailers are one of the best parts about going to the movies. So as I was sitting in movie after movie, one trend that I kept seeing was in the movie previews is the abundance of upcoming movies starring Kevin Costner. Here is a glimpse of the four movies he will be starring in in 2014, a personal record for Costner.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

Kevin Costner portrays a CIA official in the fifth movie in the Jack Ryan film series. Shadow Recruit tells the story of Jack Ryan (Chris Pine), a covert CIA analysis, who must prevent a Russian plot to crash the United States Economy. Costner’s character acts as Jack Ryan’s backup, assisting in stopping the Russians.

3 Days to Kill

Coming to theaters this Friday, 3 Days to Kill tells the thrilling story of a dying Secret Service agent (Costner) who must complete one last mission that has the potential to save his life. Along the way he attempts to reconnect with his daughter.

Draft Day

In this movie, Costner stars as the General Manager for the Cleveland Browns. Throughout the movie, Costner’s character takes risks and plays the system as he tries to acquire his team the number on draft pick. This sports drama will be hitting theaters in April!

McFarland

Finally, in this Disney movie, Kevin Costner will star as an inspired track coach who transforms a track team in a small Californian town into champions. This movie comes from the same writers as other classics such as Cast Away and Apollo 13, so it is sure to have some very inspiration moments! Look for this movie to hit theaters in late fall.

All four of these movies sound like they could be true winners for Costner. Hopefully this is just the beginning of the Costner comeback!
