10 Fashion Moments that Rocked 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

With the new semester starting, I cannot wait to see what 2012 has in store for us fashionistas. Seeing all the spring/summer 2012 collections already out, I know I won’t be disappointed, but let’s go back and take a look at the biggest fashion moments of 2011!

Wedding Bliss

2011 was definitely the year of weddings. Responsible for the wedding madness is the one and only Kate Middleton and the Royal Wedding. The two dresses designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen were the very definition of elegance while also being modern.

The next wedding also coming out of the UK was the wedding of the famous Kate Moss. Stunning in a John Galliano dress and Manolo Blahnik shoes that had a blue lining, Kate Moss looked like quite the fairy princess.

And not to leave the US behind, the wedding of the year certainly goes to the one and only Miss Kim Kardashian. Her wedding extravaganza had millions waiting in front of their TV’s to watch the E!News Special: Kim Kardashian’s Fairytale Wedding. And her three custom designed Vera Wang gowns did not disappoint. From a princess gown to two other body hugging dresses, Kim K was a stunning visions in white. Maybe one day she’ll get to do it all over again!

The IT affordable bag

The UK based company Cambridge Satchel & Cocreated a frenzy of popularity with their adorable and affordable satchels. Varying in colors and styles, these bags are definitely a MUST HAVE in every fashionista’s closet.

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen

The UK Fashion Council named Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen Fashion Designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards 2011. Taking over after McQueen’s death, the first creations that we saw were Kate Middleton’s wedding gowns. Burton then did not fail to amaze us again during fashion week and I am sure we’ll be seeing more great things from her in the years to come.

Givenchy’s Black Panther

Givenchy’s Ricardo Tisci designed the whole autumn-winter 2011 collection around the symbol of the “Panther” and what an exquisite collection it was. Dark shades followed by hints of purple, cobalt blue, and acid yellow. One of the most important collections this fall, it will certainly go down in history.

J.Crew produces Style

J.Crew’s creative director Jenna Lyons stated that the brand is looking to create style not quick fashion. They’re interested in making quality pieces, not clothes that don’t feel worth what you paid for.

Missoni for Target

The long awaited Missoni collection hit the Target stores on September 13th and it actually crashed Target’s website for a few hours. Sweaters from $44.99 and silk scarves from $19.99 were among the few popular items available and it created a huge market for designer brands for less. Versace for H&M followed suit and Marni for H&M is in the works to come out this year.

Miu Miu Sparkles

Miu Miu stated to the world that all women love glitter and unleashed a frenzy of sparkles in their shoe collection. All you fashionistas who rocked the sparkly dress with your sparkly heels for the 2011 New Year’s Eve party, now you know who to thank!

Ombre Hair

Hollywood went crazy last year over the Ombre Hair trend which entails dark brown roots & a lighter shade of blonde as you are reaching the ends of your hair. One good thing about this trend? You don’t have to worry about your roots coming out because it’s actually in style to have dark roots. Thank you, Hollywood!

Young actresses that don’t dress so young anymore

We’ve seen with examples of questionable behavior from young actresses like Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens that it’s not always so flattering to act older than you are. However there is a way to do this right. Examples? Hailee Steinfield, Abigail Breslin, Dakota Fanning, Sarah Hyland, Emma Watson and a slew of other young actresses who turn to high fashion couture to make that jump into adulthood; the rest of the Hollywood should definitely take notice.

So my dear fashionistas, now that you’ve seen all that went down in 2011, what trends are you most excited to see in 2012?
