Year: Senior — Class of ‘19

Major: Music Therapy

Hometown: Mount Sterling, KY

What made you choose Belmont?

I was between either coming to Belmont or the University of Louisville because of my desire to be a music therapist (both of these schools had the major I wanted)! I picked Belmont because of its location in Nashville, its Christian community, its small size, and its beauty.

What are you involved in on campus?

I am the president of the Belmont Chapter of the American Music Therapy Association for Students (BAMTAS). I am also a Resident Assistant in Dickens Hall. I am also in the Honors Program on campus.

Why did you choose music therapy?

I chose music therapy because it combined all of my greatest passions! Ultimately, I aspire to combine my appetite for music with my appreciation for all people to create my own anthem, a melody I can sing for the rest of my life, by fusing my two greatest passions: empowering people through music.

What is your favorite class you have ever taken at Belmont?

My favorite class I have ever taken at Belmont University was Theory & Interpretation. This class was super intriguing to me, as we were investigating phenomenology, hermeneutics, and aesthetics and how those concepts would affect research. I felt like I was challenged to think in profound ways, and it prepared me to begin working on my thesis.

What do you like most about Nashville?

I love that there is always something going on here. I also enjoy that all of my favorite artists almost always seem to have Nashville on their tours. I also love the people that I have met here and enjoy the community of the city and on campus.

Where is your favorite place to go in Nashville?

Some of my very favorite things to do in Nashville is to see the exhibit at the Frist Center for the Arts and visit the Nashville Farmers’ Market. Hattie B’s and the Franklin Juice Co. are some of my favorite places to eat! My church, Ethos, is also one of the things in Nashville that always brightens my day.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?

Uh oh… I’ve recently become a Hulu girl! I am watching Seinfeld and This Is Us.

What are your favorite bands?

My favorite artists are The Collection, Josh Garrels, The Oh Hellos, The Brilliance and Zach Winters.

What is your favorite quote?

This is a hard question for me, because I am such a lover of words! So, a couple:

“It is easy to be heavy; hard to be light” – G.K. Chesterton

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood” – Dr. Stephen R. Covey

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default” – J.K. Rowling

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” – Ephesians 3:11

Do you have any advice for freshman?

I would advise you, freshmen, to allow yourself the courage to be yourself and the grace to understand you will always continue to grow. Run hard after what you know is true! Make goals in all areas of life! Follow after them among friends! You will end up having a blast and gaining wisdom.
