I Believe in Nashville

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

If you have ever walked down 12 South, you have probably seen flocks of people gathered around the ‘I Believe in Nashville’ mural taking pictures (and let’s be real, you have taken a picture in front of it too). This wall has become somewhat iconic within the Nashville community and is loved and appreciated by many.

Last week it was discovered that the wall had been defaced. A black tar substance covered the mural, leaving many shocked and upset.

I originally read about the incident in the Tennessean. The painter of the mural, Adrien Saporiti, issued a statement and talked about the unfortunate incident. In his statement he did not express anger, but instead expressed his wishes that the mural, once restored, will continue to serve as a symbol of unity and positivity. He used the opportunity to remind people to be kind and encouraged the community to do good for others.

I’m not going to lie, his response surprised me a bit. We live in a world where anger and hate seem to sometimes dominate our lives. We encounter negativity and divide everyday. In a world filled with war and tragedy, it’s hard to find a silver lining sometimes. It was strange to me that Saporiti was so vocal about taking the situation and encouraging people to embrace goodness.

I will be the first to admit that I sometimes look at the world and only see the horrible things that take place. Sometimes my faith in humanity dwindles and it’s easier to just see things negatively. But it’s people like Saporiti that remind me that there is still good, even in unfortunate situations.

It’s my hope that more people will be inspired by goodness. In the spirit of Saporiti and the ‘I Believe in Nashville’ mural, I encourage you to remember that we are all part of an amazing community here in Nashville. Today, take a minute to believe in the goodness of others. Spread hope and be a light in a world that so often sees darkness. Believe in Nashville, but also believe in what one simple act of kindness can do for the world.
