April 14th is Record Store Day: Here’s What to Expect

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

Record Store Day is a celebration of local record stores throughout the entire world: every continent except Antarctica, actually! Artists release new physical copies of their music to promote purchasing from independent retailers. Every year on April 15 since 2008, known artists have made appearances at the nearest shop to draw attention and bring business back to physical music. New to the scene? Here’s what to expect:

Lines. Expect every record rat you know to come creeping out of their hole in the wall. It’s a big day for releases, and there are usually promotions and small concerts going on. You have to be prepared to wait a while.

Making Friends. Chances are, your neighbors in line will inevitably have something in common with you. Right there is an icebreaker built into whatever event you’re at! Music taste is universal, and can also lead to some cherished friendships.

Store-Goers Bringing Food. Don’t be afraid to bring donuts, coffee, last night’s leftover cookies, etc.! Record Store Day is full of waiting and conversation that’s well-accompanied by some fun snacks. Treat yourself!

Spending more money than you thought you would. Even if you have a plan for what you’re going to buy, you may want to bring a few extra dollars. Why? Because you may find that fated album you’ve been looking forever for, or an album that would make the perfect addition to your collection. If you’re a newbie, it’s extremely easy to get caught up and end up with $120 worth of purchases on your first go. Take it easy, and watch your wallet.

The album you came for selling out. Get there early if you want to get the best shot at purchasing what you came for. Only a certain amount of new releases are sent to each location, and they will sell out quickly.

Shoving. Folks are serious about collector’s items. Think of this as a hipster Black Friday, except the big screen televisions and children’s toys are replaced with timeless tunes. Stand firm, and go after what you want whole-heartedly.

Free Stuff (if you’re there early). Some record shops have promotions for the first people coming into the store. Check online with your local store to see if this is an opportunity for you!

A New Tradition. Bring your buds! You can make a new annual hangout helping local businesses, and celebrating the treasure that is physical music. Whether you get ready and head out at 4 A.M. or casually stroll in later, participating in the festivities is sure to be a pleasant experience that you’ll never forget. Long live vinyl!
