10 Essential Summer Songs for the Old Soul in All of Us

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

1. “Take it Easy” – Eagles

This HAS to be at the top of the list. How could it not be? This song screams summer in every way, shape, and form. The moment that I hear the opening chord, I know that everyone in the car is going to be excited. I know from past experiences that this song is a must-have on any car ride with my best friend, Reynna. An added sunset always enhances the experience.

2. “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” – Paul Simon

This song is just happy. Paul Simon went from a very serious career in Simon & Garfunkel to a very lighthearted one, with a basis of acoustic guitar and amazing, playful lyrics. This is not the only song of Paul’s that should be taken advantage of its use in the summer months. Other favorites like “Kodachrome” and “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” are also crucial.

3. “Pencil Thin Mustache” – Jimmy Buffett

If you know me personally, there is a clear reason why I chose this song. I know it isn’t the most well-known of Jimmy Buffett’s, but I could’ve chosen Margaritaville and given you the basic. I chose to enlighten the readers with my favorite one of Jimmy’s songs. This song is just plain fun. The lyrics are hilarious, and the song is easy to learn on guitar for some campfire sing-a-longs.

4. “Glory Days” – Bruce Springsteen

The first lick of the electric guitar at the beginning instantly puts summer into my head. I think about how we are basically living in what will soon be our “glory days,” and it inspires me to have an amazing summer, and next few years, to be honest. Bruce is an incredible storyteller in his music, and this is a prime example of his artistry.

5. “Brown Eyed Girl” – Van Morrison

One of the only songs written about people like me, brown eyed girls! You can’t deny that this song makes an appearance on almost everybody’s summer playlist year after year. Everyone knows the words, it’s a great song for barbecues and other functions going on in the warm weather.

6. “Me and Bobby McGee” – Janis Joplin

Either Janis or the Grateful Dead do this song complete justice. The ultimate road trip song. Even the lyrics are about a road trip! This song is just super warm and happy, and screaming it while driving is my preferred method of receiving it.

7. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” – The Rolling Stones

The beginning acoustic guitar reminds me of a nice beach drive. This is another favorite in many people’s minds, and this song is undeniably a classic.

8. “Fat Bottomed Girls” – Queen

Great karaoke song, great sing-along song, amazing overall. I think that this song and an honorable mention of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” are Queen’s most summery, warm songs. They scream a good time.

9. “Don’t Ask Me Why” – Billy Joel

I know not everyone would think of Billy Joel when they think of summer, but being from Jersey, of course I do. Being such a big Joel fan, I’ve been to about six or seven of his concerts. I can tell you from experience that when he plays this song live, even in the dead of winter, this song will make you feel like its mid-July.

10. “My Sweet Lord” – George Harrison

I tried to fit a Beatles song in here, but couldn’t commit to a song. So, George Harrison will have to do. You can’t even deny the fact that this song just sounds like warm weather. My fellow musicians out there will totally relate to that statement.
