Winter Vacation: Lake Placid Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

For most, winter is the time to hibernate: stay inside, drink tea and hot cocoa, and reminisce about those long, hot summer days. Usually, summer is the time for vacations where people travel to Florida or the Caribbean.  When the word “vacation” is spoken, the majority of us don’t consider vacation a winter concept, yet there are so many locations to absorb the perks of winter, specifically Lake Placid, New York.

Home to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics and the famous defeat of the USSR by the United States in men’s hockey, Lake Placid offers a combination of national history and winter recreation.

For those who like to ski or snowboard, the Adirondack region is perfect for all the slope bunnies. The day can be well-spent riding up and down the ski lifts or attempting to tackle the double black diamond trails. For those who prefer a quieter atmosphere, Lake Placid contains a little town with boutiques, ranging from a gourmet popcorn shop to a Christmas shop complete with every type of Christmas decoration known to man. If you’re between the two extremes of hitting up the slopes and leisurely walking around town, there is a plethora of opportunities available to enjoy the winter weather.

Because it’s so cold, the lakes tend to freeze and everyone takes advantage of that. There are dog sled rides available for a small fee and people of all ages are usually found riding in the sleds around the frozen lake. Another option is ice-skating. Although the famous ice-skating rink is around the corner, it is more fun to lace up in a pair of skates and stroke around the rim of the frozen lake (which is nicely surfaced).

Besides the many outdoor recreation and activities, people need to fuel up inside in order to keep their energy going! Around town there are little restaurants and cafés that cater to the relaxed, cozy atmosphere of Lake Placid. There is a small crepe restaurant that has the best crepes and breakfast and a fantastic variety of extravagant coffees. I personally recommend the Banana and Nutella Crepe with extra fruit and the Avalanche coffee.

If you or your family or friends are looking for a nice break before winter is over, Lake Placid is the prime spot to enjoy the cold weather and perks of winter!

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
