Why I’m Taking the Word “Slut” Out of My Vocabulary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Last week, I was FaceTiming a friend from home and I asked her if she thought my homecoming outfit was too slutty. Her response was, “I don’t believe in the word slut. It is not in my vocabulary.” I was thrown off by her reply because I have never really taken the time to truly understand the use of this term that I freely use.

Slut is word that is frequently used among college students without much thought about the implications behind it.  It is offensive, belittling, and chains women down by making them insecure about their decisions. If a woman wants to hook up with someone or has hooked up with several people that does not make her a slut. She is exercising her right to say yes. The only thing she is guilty of is empowering herself through satisfaction. That is nobody’s business but hers. Nobody has the right to judge or label her because of it. If a woman is wearing something revealing, that does not make her slutty. She is confident and proud of her body, so why shouldn’t she show it off? It is a women’s right to make her own decisions and no one should judge her for it.

This enlightening experience has made me reevaluate my word choice. I am removing the term “slut” from my vocabulary and I encourage you to do the same. Next time you want to call someone a slut, don’t. Nothing is worse than other women judging other women, “How you talk about women says more about you, than it does them.” By using that word you are bringing every woman down, being discriminatory, and supporting society’s unjust double standards for a woman. If you are confident with your sexual decisions than society shouldn’t dissuade you from fulfilling a desire. As the great Queen Bey once said, “[…] don’t have any shame about being sexual. I’m not embarrassed about it, and I don’t feel like I have to protect that side of me because I do believe that sexuality is a power we all have.”

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
