It was August 25th when I watched Miley emerge from the belly of a robotic stuffed bear, tongue wagging in all directions, while wearing a matching bear onesie on the VMAs.  The first few beats of “We Can’t Stop” started to blare over the audience and Miley began her performance that would, for better or for worse, be forever seared into my memory.  After she and Robin Thicke walked off stage, I, like many others, was utterly confused and somewhat revolted.  WHY did she think that performance was alright to do on television?  Why is she crazy?  Why did she cut her hair? Why did she take her clothes off? Why is she naked on stage?  Why is her tongue not going back in her mouth?  Is something wrong?  Was this staged?  Where did that foam finger come from?  Is that what twerking looks like?  Oh boy, here comes another child star train wreck story.  I don’t like her anyways.

Granted, I never really liked Miley Cyrus to begin with – I was one of the few girls who never watched Hannah Montana and I secretly always held a grudge against her for dating Nick Jonas, who was supposed to be MY boyfriend back in the day.  But if this was supposed to be her comeback, she did very little to impress me.  I wasn’t a fan of this crazy, party hardy, hypersexual singer..

Fast forward four months.  It is now the end of fall semester and I finally admitted to myself and others that I, Marlena, am a Miley Cyrus fan.  I have her CD, I have watched all her performances, know the words to most of her songs, and kind of want to be her friend.  Weird right?  I can’t help it though – Team Miley is an addictive team to be on.  Once you get past the obscurity of this “new” Miley, you can’t help but notice more and more things you like about the girl!  Here are a few reasons why I joined Team Miley, and why you should hop on board too.

  1. The Music

Miley’s new album, Bangerz, is actually really good!  She has been trying new and different sounds and styles that are a far cry from her old Disney pop and country hits she was once known for.  No two songs on the album sound alike and the album itself is packed with collaborations sung with other famous performers, such as Ludacris, French Montana, and the queen herself, Ms. Britney Spears.  While we all know “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball,” some lesser known songs on her album that I’m sure you’ll love are “Adore You,” “SMS (Bangerz),” and “Love Money Party.”

  1. She Can Take Criticism Like A Pro

After that astonishing VMA performance, Miley received a ton of angry backlash from fans, media, and other celebrities.  While many other performers would have crumbled under all that negative pressure, Miley kept a positive attitude, stuck to her goals, and is now the most talked about singer in the WORLD.  If there’s one thing we can learn from Miss Miley, it’s to always keep positive even if you’re at the receiving end of hateful comments.

  1. She Raps Now

She’s multi-talented, people! If you haven’t already, check out the song “23” by Juicy J and Whiz Khalifa.  Miley rocks it.

  1. She’s A Fashionista

If you have ever seen her Marc Jacobs outfit for the 2013 Met Gala or her pure white suit she wore to the AMAs, Miley has a style all her own that no one but her can pull off.  While her onstage costumes are rather eccentric and out of this world, her red carpet style is very bold, much like herself.  She is establishing herself as a style icon and major fashion designers are starting to take notice.

  1. She’s Doing Fine Without Liam

Miley Cyrus went through a very public break up with her fiancé Liam Hemsworth earlier in the year.  While this is heartbreaking for anyone in this position, Miley managed to move on through her music and success.  When asked about the breakup and how she is coping with it in this December’s issue of Cosmopolitan, Miley responded “This is the best time of my life. I’m not going to look back on it and be like, ‘I wish I hadn’t been dwelling over a breakup,’ you know? Because that’s not what God wants my life to be about right now. God wants my life to be about being successful and being happy and blessing other people and being blessed.”  Clearly, this girl must have a good head on her shoulders to have such confidence in herself and her life, even after such a distressing experience with Liam.

I think there’s something about Miley Cyrus that any college girl can relate to.  Like us, she is reaching an age where she is breaking out of her adolescent mold and transforming into an adult (as scary as that is).  While this is an experimental process for us all, Miley is managing to do it under a constant spotlight that is always open to scrutiny.  However, she has maintained a positive outlook on life and, although sometimes controversial, is a success!
