While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

As we were all busy studying for finals and working on papers that never seemed to end, we may have missed some important things going on this past week.  Here is a little recap for those who have been caught up in a finals frenzy.

 

BC Campus is Getting More Green Space

Construction on the Boston College campus continues, and one of the upcoming projects will be adding more green space to the beautiful campus.  This summer, the Quad will undergo major construction so that one continuous walkway will go from O’Neill to the front of Stokes.  There will also be additional space for relaxation, public events, and recreation.  Some of the other projects this summer consist of updating some of the dorm halls, adding air conditioning to Conte Forum, and continuing the work on St. Mary’s Hall.

 

100 Well-Known Chefs Coming Together to Raise Money for the One Fund

On May 15, 2013 from 6pm-10pm, 100 of the city’s, nation’s, and world’s most famous chefs will come together at Fenway Park.  The “Boston Bites Back Event,” organized by Ming Tsai, Ken Oringer, the Boston Red Sox, Governor Patrick, Mayor Menino, and ARAMARK, is a one night only event that any foodie will not be able to resist.  Tickets can be purchased online, and this is a 21+ event.

 

The Great Gatsby Opens This Weekend with Huge Success

As of Saturday at 3pm, the film adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has already grossed $53 million in ticket sales!  With big names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan, this movie is sure to dazzle!  Despite mixed reviews and competition from Iron Man 3, which also opened this weekend, Gatsby goers are heading to the theater!

 

Randy Jackson Leaving American Idol

The last of the original American Idol judges will be leaving after this season.  After twelve seasons as a judge, Jackson said he decided to leave to focus on his record label and other business opportunities.  He has loved being part of a show that has changed television and he is leaving on a good note.  Now who will be replacing his place at the judges’ table with Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban?

 

Advancement in Same-Sex Marriage this Week

On Tuesday, Delaware became the 11th state to legalize same-sex marriage.  The new law will be effective July 1st.  This came just one week after Rhode Island legalized same-sex marriage.  In addition, the Minnesota House votes to advance their same-sex marriage bill on Thursday.  Marriage equality is continuing to spread in the US!

Meghan Gibbons is a double major in Communications and Political Science in her senior year at Boston College. Although originally from New Jersey, she is a huge fan of all Boston sports! Kelsey Damassa is in her senior year at Boston College, majoring in Communications and English. She is a native of Connecticut and frequents New York City like it is her job. On campus, she is the Campus Correspondent for the Boston College branch of Her Campus. She also teaches group fitness classes at the campus gym (both Spinning and Pump It Up!) and is an avid runner. She has run five half-marathons as well as the Boston Marathon. In her free time, Kelsey loves to bake (cupcakes anyone?), watch Disney movies, exercise, read any kind of novel with a Starbucks latte in hand, and watch endless episodes of "Friends" or "30 Rock."
