Latest Report on Deadly Fire in Boston
Two firemen were killed in a Back Bay fire last week, and the newest reports suggest two welders who fled the scene without notifying anyone about the fire started the blaze. The tragedy comes close to a year after the Boston Marathon Bombings, where the same Fire Department was one of the first to respond. Massachusetts Senator Ken Donnelly has publicly stated that there should be criminal charges. Massachusetts, however, does not have a criminally negligent homicide statute, which could make it difficult for the welding company to be held responsible for the deaths of firefighters Walsh and Kennedy.
Fort Hood Shooting
The shooting at Fort Hood, a military base in Texas, is the second shooting at that military base—with three soldiers dead and 16 wounded. The shooter, Spc. Ivan Lopez, was apparently enraged after an employee wouldn’t give him a leave of absence form. This tragedy illuminates many issues on military bases—including security and attention to mental health. President Obama made a statement in which he recognized the valor with which the soldiers served, and the sacrifice that the men and women of Fort Hood have made for our freedom.
Jim Christian Announced as New BC Basketball Coach
Boston College Athletic Director Brad Bates confirmed on Thursday that Jim Christian has been hired as BC’s new Basketball coach. Christian had been the head coach of Ohio University for two seasons. Although high school recruiting doesn’t seem to be one of Christian’s best traits, he does have experience as a talent evaluator. We are all certainly looking forward to what the 2014-2015 season has in store for BC’s basketball program.
CSOM Ranked #4
Good news for business school students, Bloomberg Businessweek ranked Boston College’s Carroll School of Management #4 in the nation—moving up from its 2013 ranking of #6. CSOM seems to have always been the pride and glory of BC, and now the nation is recognizing its prestige. Even for those of us not blessed to be in CSOM, this ranking certainly garners large amounts of positive national attention for Boston College.
Inspiring Make-Up Ads
Dermablend came out with advertising videos that reveal women’s “true faces.” In this inspiring ad campaign, women wipe away a full face of make-up rather than put it on. For one woman, this reveals a skin pigment condition called vitilligo, which causes her skin to be two different colors. For another woman, she reveals severe acne and redness after scrubbing off her makeup. According to Dermablend, this ad campaign is meant to inspire women who have overcome skin related obstacles.
