While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

So I know that the semester just started and everyone is probably very busy with school and friends so just like me you probably haven’t been keeping up with what is happening in the world. So here’s a little snap shot of what’s been going on the last week in the U.S. and the world! I hope it helps keep you updated and cultured!

Police Slice Off Woman’s Hair Weave

This is a really horrible and horrifying story. A police officer Bernadette Najor was checking in the perpetrator Sarda Gergory 22, when she took it upon herself to cut away at Gregory’s weave. For those of us you who don’t know what a weave is, it is a hair piece that has been sown into someone’s hair by using really tiny braids. This police officer proceeded to pull and cut away at Gregory’s hair for about 3 minutes until she yanked the last part off. Gregory has some bald spots now due to the brutal removal of her weave. Officer Najor claims she needed to remove it because Gregory said she would commit suicide using it, but that does not explain why she did it with such force. Since the incident Officer Najor has been fired and Gregory was released after being charged for her act of trashing a hotel room.

The Huge Storm Down South

We all know what happened in the south this past week. On the 27th of January there was a huge storm that brought the snow to our counterparts down South. The fast moving snowstorm didn’t hit the Northeast this time but instead hit the South! It brought severe weather, ice and temperatures that kept most of the southern population paralyzed. The least of these problems was the temperature. The storm caused many accidents and fender benders, and commuter traffic was extremely tumultuous. Many school districts did not have the means to make it safe for their students, so, unfortunately, many people were stuck having to leave their kids in school overnight. There was so much chaos that there was a point that helicopter teams were being sent out to look for stranded Southerners! How much snow did they really get?  In reality there got 2 inches of snow but the problem was that they did not have the amenities to remove and proof the roads to make it safe for travel.

Harry Potter: The Ending May Be Wrong?!

I read this week that J.K. Rowling said in an interview with Wonderland Magazine that her pairing of Ron and Hermione was for “personal reasons having little to do with literature.” Though I feel that Ron and Hermione are perfect for one another I can’t help but feel a little betrayed in the ending. What does that now mean for the book series, who does Rowling think Hermione should have been paired with. Rowling explains in the interview that she “wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment’ and she came the conclusion that because of that decision she believes that the couple may eventually need counseling. Her thoughts were that how the books were written, many fans believe she had made a mistake in pairing up the two and that the truly happy couple should have been Harry and Hermione.
