While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

For those of you who missed the news this past week, here’s your weekly recap!

A New Pope!

Perhaps the biggest news of the week—there is a new leader of the Catholic Church!  On March 13th, the white smoke rose up and the Church announced Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Buenos Aires, Argentina as the new pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.  He will be called Francis—as so many memes have revealed.

Luke Bryan Wins

Luke Bryan has officially beaten out Jimi Hendrix for the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s top 200 albums chart.  Bryan’s fourth album Spring Break… Here to Party most recently sold 150,000 during its first week of release.  This figure surpasses rock legend Jimi Hendrix’s second album’s record of 72,000 buys.  Bryan tweets, “Hope everyone is liking spring break album. Thanks everyone for getting it. Love y’all.”

Obama on Energy

In his first energy speech this term, President Obama made some bold statements about promoting new energy spending.  Calling the increase in gas prices a “reminder that we need to do more,” Obama claims that the key lies in the innovation of automobiles that no longer use oil.  Obama’s plan to increase energy spending without increasing the deficit involves reallocating revenue from public lands’ oil and gas to energy research.

Lil Wayne—On his Death Bed?

Everyone in the Twittersphere got the shock of a weektime as tweets flared up, circulating the news that rapper Lil Wayne was on life support due to a series of seizures.  Recent reports reveal that Lil Wayne—Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., to the hospital—was never in a coma, as rumors stated, but did have his stomach pumped three times to flush his system of substances.  Everything from prayers to shocking he-deserves-its began to pop up until finally, Lil Wayne’s Official Twitter account put an end to it with the tweet: “I’m good everybody.  Thx for the prayers and love.”
