Death of Philip Seymour Hoffman
I can speak for most people: we didn’t see this one coming. Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment last Sunday as a result of a heroin overdose. Super Bowl Coke Commercial
Although the Super Bowl may not have been an exciting event, some of the advertisements shown during the broadcast stirred a lot of interest. One in particular was an ad done by the Coca-Cola Company. In this commercial, the company has singers of seven different languages sing “America the Beautiful,” along with showing scenes of various races, cultures, and sexual orientation. The commercial became a social media outbreak, with many voicing their opinions on Twitter. Conservative news organizations have been calling it anti-American, whereas others claim it represents America as a “melting pot.”
CVS Ending Tobacco Sales
CVS announced on Wednesday that they would stop selling tobacco and tobacco products starting Oct. 1, 2014. They are the first major pharmacy chain that has put a ban on tobacco products. Larry J. Merlo, the company’s CEO, stated, “Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose.” In promoting a healthy lifestyle, CVS will no longer stock the products in an attempt to help consumers break the habit. The real question is how the other leading pharmacies will react to this change.
