Welles Remy Crowther Red Bandana 5K Run

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Please Join The Crowther Family & the Boston College Volunteer and Service Learning Center on Saturday, October 19th for the 9th Annual Welles Remy Crowther Red Bandana 5K Run in honor of Welles R. Crowther, BC Class of 1999 and a 9/11 Civilian Hero. If you are interested in registering for the race, all you need to do is check out the Welles 5k website.

The Welles Remy Crowther Red Bandana Red is a 5K road race held as an annual tribute to Welles Crowther, a 9/11 hero. The day is designed to bring all levels of runners together to have fun and to raise funds for the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust.

Welles was a 1999 graduate of Boston College and a varsity lacrosse player for the Eagles.  Welles lived in New York and traded equities for Sandler O’Neill at the World Trade Center.  Welles was also a member of the Empire Hook and Ladder Co., No 1., in Upper Nyack, New York. On September 11th, when the attacks on the World Trade Center began, Welles was no longer an equities trader. He became a firefighter.

Months after September 11th, after piecing together stories of the events, Welles’s heroic acts came to light. Welles Crowther used the last hour of his life to save others. He used his red bandana, one which he always carried in his back pocket, to cover his nose and mouth for protection against smoke and debris while he directed others to safety.

The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust recognizes young people who serve their communities through annual gifts and special awards and also supports not for profit organizations.

Visit www.crowthertrust.org for additional information and to learn more about Welles’s story.

You can also stop by the BC Bookstore and check out The Man in the Red Bandanna, a biography of Welles for children, written by his sister Honor Crowther Fagan and illustrated by his uncle John Crowther.
