The Week of Unexpected Events

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Since many of us are stuck in the library writing papers and studying for exams, the outside world may seem a blur. So for those of you who haven’t been watching the news, here are some surprising events that happened this week.

Russia Hockey Defeat

The Russian Olympic hockey team has a reputation for being well trained, talented, and eager to win. In the quarterfinals, Finland was not about to roll over and let the host team make good on its reputation. After taking a 1-0 lead due to a power play, Finland went on to tie the score before the period ended. Even a goalie switch couldn’t improve Russia’s offense and ultimately Finland beat Russia 3-0 after scoring twice in the second period. Finland will play Sweden next.

Skating Prodigy Falls in Short Program

After helping the Russian figure skating team take the Gold in the team event with a flawless program, Yulia Lipnitskaya fell on a triple flip. The 15-year-old European Champion is now in fifth place. Unlike the hockey team, Lipnitskaya has a chance to regain ground in her long program. At this point, medalling will prove difficult unless a mistake by the four skaters ahead; fourth place is American, Gracie Gold.

BC Breaks Syracuse’s Undefeated Season

It’s like the little train that could, and if you haven’t heard this story, you must be living under a rock. Boston College Men’s Basketball travelled to Syracuse Wednesday night to take on the undefeated home team. After being down at the start of the second half, BC came back to tie the home team and force the game into overtime. Still mourning the passing of Dick Kelley, BC won the game 62-59. Most are deeming the game “The upset of the year.”

Finally, An Almost Upset

While not actually an upset, Latvia was tied 1-1 with Canada during the second period and into the third. What was expected to be a complete Canadian overrun, this game turned into a fight with neither team willing to give up a second goal. Third period power play goal by Shea Weber allowed the hockey stronghold to take a 1-point lead and the game. Final score Canada 2, Latvia 1. Canada faces the U.S. next in the semifinals.

The Sochi games end February 23rd, so let’s be sure to cheer on Team USA in the last days.
