Top Five Movies to Watch When You’re Feeling Homesick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Starting to feel a little homesick?  Is the stress of classes getting to you?  Take a break, grab your friends and catch up with some of my favorite movies that are sure to help you relax and have a good time!

He’s Just Not That Into You

Synopsis: This movie follows the lives of five very different women as they try to decode the complicated world of relationships, flirting, and love.  The women work through everything from overthinking and serial flirting to online dating and dealing with men who refuse to define the relationship.  Although this movie covers many real life dilemmas, a good joke or an awkward encounter is never too far behind to keep you laughing.

My Favorite Quotes:
Woman #1: “I’m sure he just forgot your number.”
Woman #2: “Or was eaten by a lion.”

Angela: “The second you hear that, run to the store, get yourself some ribs and some ice cream, because you have been dumped.”

27 Dresses

Synopsis:  Ever hear the phrase, “Always the bridesmaids, never the bride”?  This movie introduces us to Jane, who has been a bridesmaid twenty seven times, and is currently planning a wedding for Tess, her incredibly demanding and conceited younger sister.  Only problems is, Tess is engaged to marry George, the man of Jane’s dreams.  Jane attempts to keep her cool throughout the wedding planning, all while trying to dodge Kevin Doyle, the cynical, yet flirtatious, newspaper writer.  Not only is this movie hilarious, but I can also guarantee you will have the song “Bennie and the Jets” stuck in your head for at least a week after watching it.

My Favorite Quotes:
Kevin: “Love is patient, love is kind, love means slowly losing your mind.”

Jane: “I feel like I just found out my favorite love song was written about a sandwich.”

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Synopsis:  Kate Hudson stars as Andie Anderson, a go-getter magazine writer, who is waiting for her big break so that she can become a serious news reporter.  At first, she isn’t fazed by her task of discovering “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” but little does she know, her target, Ben, has a secret bet going of his own.  Things start to get tricky once real feelings are involved, and the duo needs to make some serious decisions.  Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s chemistry and humor make for a winning combination.

My Favorite Quotes:
Andie: “Our love fern! You let it die!”

Andie: “I don’t think I can be with someone who doesn’t like animals and thinks I’m a mental person.”

Mean Girls

Synopsis:  In case you feel like reminiscing about high school days, this is the movie for you. Watch Lindsay Lohan (pre-crazy) play Cady Heron, a homeschooled transfer student from Africa, battle it out with Regina George for the title of queen bee.  This movie is full of hilarious characters, intensely amusing high school drama, and some of the most quotable phrases I have ever heard.

My Favorite Quotes:
Damian: “Oh my God, Danny DeVito! I love your work!”

Karen: “Want to do something fun? Want to go to Taco Bell?”

Bridesmaids

Synopsis:  This movie introduces us to a group of six very different women who are thrown together to form debatably the most dysfunctional/best bridal party of all time.  Annie, Helen, Megan, Rita, and Becca work through their differences to plan the perfect wedding for their friend, Lillian.  This outrageous cast combined with Chris O’Dowd’s adorable accent makes for an unstoppable comedy.  I can honestly say I think this is the funniest movie I have ever seen, and the airplane scene is pure genius.

My Favorite Quotes:
Annie: “There’s a colonial women on the right wing of the plane and she’s churning butter. There’s something they aren’t telling us!”

Megan: “I think you’re ready to hear a little story about a girl named Megan, a girl named Megan that didn’t have a very good time in high school. I’m referring to myself when I say ‘Megan.’  It’s me, Megan.”
