5 Reasons to Attend the Student Involvement Fair

by Elizabeth LeRoux

As campus begins to buzz with excitement for the approaching school year, it is obvious that September brings about different emotions in students.  For freshman—the level of nervous energy is truly unparalleled, they come in with the strong desire to fully immerse themselves in BC life.  For sophomores, maybe you had the best freshman year ever, and maybe you didn’t, but this year is your year to really solidify your place at BC.

For juniors, like myself, we are officially halfway through college.  Some friends are abroad, and some off campus, but we are determined to make those connections last.  And last but not least, the seniors.  The beginning of your last year at BC brings about a variety of emotions—excitement, nostalgia, and pride, just to name a few.

So, you may ask, where exactly am I going with this?  My question to you is: what mantra remains consistent throughout your four years at BC?  The answer: it’s never too late.

It’s never too late to join a club, to change friend groups, to get in to Boston more, to eat at Stuart, and to knock those last few items off of your bucket list.

The Student Involvement Fair is held on the first Friday of the academic year from 10am-2pm on Linden Lane, and is a fabulous opportunity to be exposed to the multitude of organizations on campus.  So, with that, here are the top 5 reasons why you should attend the Student Involvement Fair, regardless of what year you are.

5.     Meet new people.   Throughout the time slot for the fair, you can find almost every BC student either working at a booth or strolling down linden lane.  With friendly faces everywhere, it would be difficult to miss the opportunity to introduce yourself!  The BC world is quite small, and you are bound to find people that have mutual friends.  “Oh yeah, my roommate from Freshman year’s 48 hours friend’s roommate had dinner with you at lower that one time!”  Don’t deny it, we’ve all been there.

4.     Witness the heart of BC.  Student-run organizations are the focal point of life at BC.  Walking around, looking at all of the student organizations in action is nothing short of overwhelming, but it also is a defining characteristic of BC and the student body.

3.     To get shouted at. Recruitment, anyone?  Seriously, whenever you walk by a table it’s like you are Regina George, everyone wants to be your best friend. Everybody wants you to join their club, organization, or team.  You are seriously the most popular person.  Along with the three hundred other people walking around…but that’s not the point.

2.     IT’S NOT JUST FOR FRESHMAN. I actually cannot emphasize this point enough.  Just because you are an upper classman does not mean that the involvement fair is not relevant to your life.  Although you may feel like it’s too late for you to join a club or organization, it really never is.  This is an opportunity to meet new people, and maybe try something new.  Take advantage of it!

1.     To get involved. Sorry, but I had to.  The number one reason to attend the involvement fair could not be more obvious.  Being involved is a huge part of BC and student life here.  I promise, you won’t regret it.

So, there you have it.  I expect to see you at the fair!

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
