Top 5 New Hair Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

This fall, collegiettes™ all over campus have been taking advantage of the cooler weather to rock our favorite autumn attire and accessories.  However, we all received a brutal reminder on Halloween weekend of our impending doom and, with that, the disregard of our collective appearance entirely.  Soon enough, riding boots will be replaced with Uggs and our cute sweaters will be hiding behind knee-length, puffy jackets.  So, with fashion somewhat out the window, how can we show the world that we haven’t completely given up on ourselves?  The answer:  our hair.  While you may occasionally sport the knit hat or ski mask in the freezing temperatures, these five hair ideas can keep you looking fresh in the upcoming months.

1.  The Shaggy Bob
I absolutely fell in love with Glee star Dianna Agron’s recent haircut.  A cross between a bob and a shag, this look is simultaneously sexy and adorable.  If you’re looking for a more drastic change, this is a pretty versatile cut that would work for most face shapes and hair textures.  The hair is cut above the shoulders, and then razored from back to front at a slight angle.  For those girls with curlier hair who may be skeptical, subtracting the bangs but keeping the layered sidepieces keeps hair from forming that awkward A-shape.

2.  The Loose Braid
The braid comes in many variations, but the loose single braid is a summer staple that can easily carry over into the fall and winter months.  This style works for the lazy girls out there, but is still girly and cute.  Braid the hair starting at the nape of the neck, leave a few front pieces free, and have it hang down your back or over your shoulder.

3.  The Deep Side Part
I am a firm believer that you can never go wrong with a good side part.  Don’t get me wrong, middle parts are great, but unless they are really styled well, I think that they are much harder to pull off.  The side part works with both long and short hair, and can achieve a sleek and minimal look or a curly and wild look.  A low side part like the one below instantly adds sophistication and drama to your everyday side part.

4.  All-Over Layers
For those of you who are not feeling the adventurous shaggy bob, but still feel your hair is blah, try an updated version of the mid-length cut sported by many college girls.  Slicing dimensional layers throughout the hair (like Heidi Klum’s shown below) will give it a great new shape.  This cut is flattering on any girl, but a little maintenance is required to keep the layers from getting too long and preserving the fun, youthful vibe.

5.  The Low Ponytail and Bun
The bouncy, slicked back, cheerleader-like ponytail is making way for lower, more downplayed styles.  Loose ponytails and classic chignons swept to the side are totally easy to do.  So, when you oversleep in the morning and don’t have time to fix your hair before class, you can run out the door absolutely nailing this look.  People everywhere will be wondering about your secret to artfully pulling those face-framing tendrils out of your fake messy bun.  Little do they know, you’re an actual mess who just made it work.
